Default Retro Avid Speakers

Hello. I have no technical knowledge whatsoever. I am however a degenerate gambler. Todays gamble: some big wooden squares with circles I copped at the local goodwill for 6 dollars a pop. Worth it? How do I even test these things? I imagine they need an external power source. I’m clueless when it comes to speakers though.

If anyone could identify the model, that would be most appreciated. They’re about 2.5 feet tall and 40 pounds. Manufacture date is 12/22/1975 if that helps.

Thanks in advance <3

Nothing to do with this Avid company I'm afraid. Which is a decade and something old. But we have a lot of oldtimers here on the forum that might have come across these speakers.

These are vintage speakers from Avid HiFi (https://www.avidhifi.com) a UK based manufacture of Hi Fi components.

This forum is for Avid Technology, a software company, no relation to Avid HiFi.

These look like Model 103 loud speakers (https://stereonomono.blogspot.com/20...dspeakers.html), you should have a model number somewhere on them. You can likely find all the info you need about them by searching online with that model number.

Ah, that figures. They are almost 50 years old at this point. I saw all the protools sections here and was amazed how AVID kept up with the times haha. Guess I was wrong

Hmmm, 2 things come to mind:
1-buying stuff you don't know how to operate? Maybe not a wise move.
2-Even though the plaque has the word Avid, I doubt these have any relation to the Avid that makes Pro Tools. The last time this company made studio monitors, they were branded digidesign and were self-powered(not to mention that Digidesign/Avid did not exist in 1975)

Try hooking up to a home hi-fi receiver. If they work, then I'd say $6 was quite a good deal

Emphasis on the degenerate in “degenerate gambler” haha. I resell electronics and have a good deal of experience with small electronics so I wasn’t too intimidated with a twelve dollar gamble like this. But yeah, I just joined the first avid forum I could find. Who’da thunk there’d be multiple avid audio companies

In case you missed it, I was trying to edit this onto my earlier post...

I lived in the UK for a while, some folks I knew there had some Avid gear, don't see much of it in the USA.
