Default Simple Strike help needed

Owned Strike for quite awhile, have deliberately not gone into it deeply, i.e doing much programming/editing, as I have just grown tired of spending time with that, new learning curve, etc. Been happy using it as glorified click track/writing tool, throwing in whatever preset fills work best.

However I'm doing a project I'm finding myself wanting to go ahead and program some patterns and I just don't have my head in it as far as remembering how to write/save patterns. I'm not seeing a lot of detail on this in the manual- I think I'm must be missing something because I learned how to do this before... Just can't remember now.

Here's where I'm at (sorry, gonna talk like I'm 6): I've got a track programmed in a session. I went in and changed the main pattern (just took some of the snare out) How do I save this edited pattern and be able to revert to the original? I notice that it appears to be tied to the session, as when I playback, the pattern begins unedited and changes when it gets to where I happened to be stopped in the timeline when I worked on this. How does that work?

I realize this is basic stuff- can someone point me to an easy overview of programming your own custom tracks.
Thanks

PS: On a second note, if someone wanted to have some fun, the project I'm doing is a cover of Shawn Phillips' Song For Sagittarians/Looking Up Looking Down. If someone wanted to collab and show me what Strike is capable of by recreating the drums in that that could be cool...
