Do you keep samples for VIs on internal or audio drive?
Hi everyone. I just added a SSD to the optical bay of my laptop for my audio. I use some virtual instruments like BFD, and I use Reason. Should I move the audio/samples for those to the SSD drive for faster performance, or just leave it on the internal? What do most people do?
Thanks!

Re: Do you keep samples for VIs on internal or audio drive?
You'll definitely get faster loading and streaming from the ssd. I myself just moved my samples to an ssd, its much better. Plus, assuming you only have one internal drive which is also your system drive, its much better to have samples treaming from a different drive, because the system drive has to run everything esle.

Re: Do you keep samples for VIs on internal or audio drive?
It is never recommended by any VI manufacturer to have your samples on the same drive as your audio.
Ideally, the samples should be on a separate driver, separate from the system and separate from the audio. If you can not have that many drives, then keep the samples on the system drive. But do not put them on the audio drive. The audio drive should be just for audio. |

I think Reason insists that the stock samples are on the main drive.

System drive, you need the option of reformatting your audio drive between sessions w/o needing to reinstall stuff back to it

Re: Do you keep samples for VIs on internal or audio drive?
Can't help with laptop, but normally it's the 4th drive in the Mac.
Drives: 1 System 2 Audio 3 Backup 4 Samples All additional drives are external after those 4. |

Re: Do you keep samples for VIs on internal or audio drive?
Depends a bit on your intended use for the machine.
Do you mainly record/mix audio with the occasional vi use or instead are composing/sequencing full-time with some recording thrown in. If you're of the later disposition, you could consider cloning your os drive to the ssd and also putting your main sound banks there. Depending on your audio needs you could then be able to function with the original hd as your audio drive (especially with a cptk/hd licence). Otherwise, you could either use an external as needed or change the spinner for a second ssd!

Re: Do you keep samples for VIs on internal or audio drive?
I recently removed both of my HDD's and replaced them with three SSD's...OS, Samples, and Audio. Everything is much faster now. Prior to this I had samples and audio on the same HDD, which worked fine, but 3 or more drives is even better if possible.

Re: Do you keep samples for VIs on internal or audio drive?
My Win-7 PC was large enough to accommodate 4HDs, so I have 1 OS drive, 1 for PT sessions (audio drive); 1 catch all, download stuff to drive; and 1 for all samples. The OS and Sample drive are each 1tb. So far, I've not had any issues with things set up this way. My Nexus 2, Alchemy and Structure all access the samples they need right off the Sample drive with no problems.
For Reason, though, I think it works like this: the factory Refills...what it comes shipped with...must be on the OS drive. Refills you purchase from 3rd parties can be installed wherever you wish. At least that's what I've done and it works fine. But I don't believe you can move Reason samples attached to the 2 factory Refills it came with to any other location then where it was installed, otherwise, Reason won't find them.
