Default G5 power suddenly switch off when in protools

I have a really strange problem.

Lately my G5 suddenly, without any warning, switch power off when I'm working in protools. It doesn't happen when working in other applications or programs. I've tried to un-dust the computer, checked if the fan was working etc.

It's probably just a coincidense, but it all began when I started working with Reason in the background. Now it happens all the time (without opening Reason).

I've tried to change the wires, power cable and all, but I still have the problem.

At first it happend a few times a week, then all the time, then it disappeared and worked fine for 10 days, and now I'm back to all the time.

What the heck is going on ?

Anyone experienced this ?

Cheers

Thanks for posting that link.

That's really disturbing.

But now I know I'll have to back everything up and get a new computer.
What a downside.

It may also be the service recall they did for some G5's power supplies. If you check this page you can check if your machine is included... One of my old machines fits the serial range but isn't showing any of the symptoms...

Well

I had this several times on my dual 2.3 NOT WATER COOLED

It started with no reason when I was burning CDs in background or connecting firewire drives.

I have been in contact with apple but ther has been no help

After such a shutdown I cleaned mac with onyx and ther was verything working for 2or3 weeks until the next sudden shutdown.

After half a year the problem went away. No sudden things since one year now.

Maybe I had just luck.

Ale

How do I know if it's water cooled or not ??

I looked in the G5's system profile, but can't find anything.

My G5's serialnumber is btw not included in the program Apple made for switching power supplies.

So, I'm still trying to find the root to the problems.

Thanks for helping.

Just for refference - my PowerMac G5's data:
Model: PowerMac7,3
CPU: Power PC G5 (3.0)
Process: 2
CPU speed: 2.5 Ghz
L2 buffer (per CPU): 512 k
Memory: 2.5 GB
Bus speed: 1.25 Ghz
Boot ROM ver.: 5.1.8f7

You can try everymac.com or Apple.com of course to find your particular model. From a quick search on everymac tho, it sounds like it is a liquid cooled machine. sigh.

Well, I got the machine from Apple doctor today.

They said it was the power supply. It cost me 700$ (but I also paid the urgent-extra package).

So far the first test with little CPU load went fine.

I'm crossing my fingers...

Thanks guys for vise input and feedback...
