dae 6042
Hi!I have a G4/400 (OS 9.1.1) running protools 5.1. I also have an atto Dual bus SCSI card connecting 2 barracuda drives(audio/video)in an external chassis(same bus),and a magma13slot expansion chassis where my ABVB,Janus and MIX Core cards reside.I get a 6042 (pci too busy to communicate with audio hardware) only when I am in playback and I change anything that has to do with the view(e.g.zooming,scrolling in a different part of a session etc.).The setting in the ATTO HBA config are as recommended(PCI burst rate 32bytes,timeout 250ms).Could it be a Video Card problem?a slot positioning problem?cables problem

Re: dae 6042
It's more of a video card problem. Check your PCI slot in orders as following :
1. AGP or the Video card that come with G4. 2. Magma Extension PCI card 3. Other PCI Cards except ATTO Card 4. ATTO Card Do you use two monitors with another Video card installed ( on the PCI slot #3 )? You have to use third part video ( support dual monitor on one PCI card ) to replace the one that come Apple G4/400. And for now, it only works with either VGA,DVI or combined with these format. I mean, it's not possible and still under testing for the dual video card ( Newest G4/933 and Dual 1G CUP with one ADC and one VGA models on their AGP cards). Gefen announced the VGA to ADC box for these new G4s that can run two Apple ADC LCDs. I myself is still waiting for my new G4/933 and the Gefen VGA/ADC box to hook up my 22" Cinema and an Apple 17" LCD. Hope this helps ! |

Re: dae 6042
Thanks 4 your reply!
My slot order is: Vga Card SCSI card Empty Expansion chassis adapter I don't need 2 monitors.Do you think that replacing the video card with a standard apple ATI rage 128 and changing the slot order would cure the problem? How about DAE buffer size?should I try changing it to 1? And 1 more question -should I disable the Nvidia and ATI extensions?Someone told me I should.. Thanks! |

Re: dae 6042
other possible causes :
set colors to 256 and in the mem control panel the disk cache to 128k

Re: dae 6042
---------------------------
My slot order is: Vga Card SCSI card Empty Expansion chassis adapter ---------------------------- I don't know the slot order in G4/400. But you should try : Slot #1 : VGA Card that come with Apple Slot #2 : Expansion Chassis Adapter Slot #3 : Empty Slot #4 : SCSI card There should be no more PCI too slow problems. ----------------------------------------- I don't need 2 monitors.Do you think that replacing the video card with a standard apple ATI rage 128 and changing the slot order would cure the problem? ------------------------------------------- Is the ATI Rage 128 come with Apple G4/400 ? If it's so, change it back will be better since it's been tested and confirmed by Digi. What kind of VGA card you're using ? Is it come with G4/400 ? --------------------------------------------- How about DAE buffer size?should I try changing it to 1? --------------------------------------------- I think it's 2 rather than 1 - please do a research or check the User manual, I remembered that there's DIGI suggested setting in details. Go with it and everything will work fine ! -------------------------------------------- And 1 more question -should I disable the Nvidia and ATI extensions?Someone told me I should.. -------------------------------------------- You will have some problems that something to do with resolutions to support your monitor. I'd suggest you do that last while you'd tried the workarounds described above. However, you have to disable some ATI extensions while you replaced the Video card that come with your G4. And there're upgrades for the video cards for fixing the bugs and/or speedy the visual handeling procedure issues.. If you'd replaced the Video card that come with your G4, you might need to install the new extensions for the new card you installed, and if you don't upgrade/remove the original ATI extensions, you will sometimes have some conflicts with them. Hope this helps ! |

Re: dae 6042
And try setting the disk cache to 512K. Yes I forgot the 256 colors setting ( thanks Chris !) However, if you are running only one monitor, I think if's no problem for you to run in thousand colors or million.. I used to have 9600 ( G3/500 Crad installed ) running thousand colors and disk cache at 512K with no problems. I am using thousands colors with Cinema display for my G4/733 with no problems. The disk cache will be more of the issue here I think.

Re: dae 6042
No I still use the video card that came with the g4/400 but i was thinking of replacing it with a video card from a newer g4.
I still have DAE buff size to 2 but I read in older messages to try and change it to 1. I can't try until 2morrow so I'm just trying to get as many ideas people can give to me!I'm gonna try everything 2 make it work! |

Re: dae 6042
A common cause of 6042's on an AV Option (ABVB video hardware) is an overlapping window onto the ABVB VGA screen.
The ABVB hardware has a VGA output which the Mac recognizes as a second Mac video monitor. Unfortunately, this second monitor can only be used for the movie window and nothing else. If you try to put, for example, the mix window on it you will get 6042's very quickly. Also, be sure to make sure that no Pro Tools windows (or any window for that matter) overlap from your main video screen onto the second. The best way to avoid windows from overlapping onto the second monitor is to arrange the two monitors diagonally in the monitors control panel. This helps prevent windows from accidentally getting moved onto the second monitor. Also, I may have missed it but I don't believe you mentioned the ATTO card Synch Rate setting, it should be set to 20/10. A higher setting can also cause 6042 error messages. There are other things that can contribute to 6042's as well, if you haven't already, you should check the Answerbase here on the Digi website for more info. Re: dae 6042
I tried everything except rearranging the 2 monitor windows(in the monitor control panel)-where it showed the 2 monitors overlapping. So can u wonnect a standard VGA monitor in the ABVB's VGA out?

Re: dae 6042
If the two monitors are overlapping in your monitors control panel, that's probably what's causing the 6042s.
Re-arrange them so that they are not overlapping and so they are diagonal to each other. Yes, you can connect a VGA monitor to the ABVB VGA connectore but you cannot use it as extra Mac desktop. The ONLY thing that can be put on that monitor is the "Movie Window" in Pro Tools when playing back ABVB video (as opposed to Quicktime). Jon Connolly Digidesign Product Specialist |
