I comp Instrument tracks often.

Let's say you do a loop record 5 times, and have PT set to create a new playlist each go around.

Just create (duplicate) 5 new tracks and set each to each of the 5 takes. Use the original track as the master take and put it on top. (Same as the playlist view).

Play each take and find the gems. Separate the clip and highlight it by changing its color (I like yellow). Or use colors to grade them. Don't worry about the exact edges yet.

Then slide up the good clips to the top track. (Use ctrl-shift when moving to keep them from changing position in the time line as you slide them up).

Then edit the comp track to smooth all the transitions and make it sound like one take.

If the instrument is big and you don't want 5 instances of it running, then create MIDI comp tracks instead of Instrument tracks. Send the output of the comp tracks to the VI on the master track before you start comping.
