I said that in another thread. half joking.
but the more i think about it the more it seems reasonable.
i mean OSX is hardly OS9, the new macs dont even work with PTLE, Apple did just buy Logic.

it doesnt look good.

unless of course you want to run a completely stable lagacy system and dont care about future updates or support.

which is actually what i plan to do.

Okay, it's fun to panic but -

Digi is not going to walk away from the Mac music/post business - Apple's got around a 65% penetration into these markets. No one makes a conscious decision to walk away from 65% of the market. (And yes, we all remember that Avid was once that stupid in the past but you also have to think back that they did that at a point where Apple's future was very much in doubt and that they have since jumped squarely back into the Apple video market. Lesson learned.)

Digi, correctly, sells audio hardware and software to make money. Period. In this business no matter how much a "partner" ticks you off, when they represent 65% of your potential base, you deal with it and move on. I'm sure they're doing that right now. The release dates for PT and PTle on OS X have already been announced and the rumor mills indicate it should be a pretty cool upgrade. The Vaio thing - marriages of convenience like this happen all the time. I do that same type of thing in another industry. You find a common cause with someone, put together an offering and hope it works. You don't bet the rest of business on it.

So calm down. Digi will continue with Apple support - I'm looking forward to upgrading my Mac and my PT at the same time this fall. And hey, if the Apple Logic s/w works well - cool - we've all got another option for making music. At the end of the day that is what it's all about - right?

I would guesstimate that 85% of Digidesign's cusomers are Mac owners. Ever seen a professional facility running PTHD or PT TDM on a PC?

Apples purchas of Emagic doesn't really compete with Digi per se because many Pro houses seem to run a Logic Front End to Digi Hardware.

I think what Apple is doing is

1. Ensuring they have a DAW that utilizes Apple technology and quick.

2. Ensure that the Logic Plat/Digi combo is alive and well.

Sony, Digi and Intel are promoting the 002 and digi would be silly not to take the cash. I think everything is fine.

I wouldn't worry about it either. Emagic's not really a direct competitor to Digidesign, they're more of a partner...they make most of their money selling software, and recommend Digi's audio hardware over their own. I don't know how many Mac vs PC LE systems they sell (I'd imagine 85% is about right) but for TDM systems I'm sure it's around 98% Mac. This just seems like an opportunity to bring in more business rather than drive it away.

IMHO it's this:

aple bought emagic, and that was not nice for pc-users. So now digidesign is promoting protools on the windows side. They just released a new version of ptle for winxp and approved winxp professional, so thats a step. Digidesign has some catching up to do for pc-users, but it is happening fast. We (i am a pc user) now have direct-connect (though no application is using it yet... ) We have the first soft-synth as RTAS (sampletank) and i am pretty sure there's more to come. 65% mac users means 45 pc-users. Thats a big share too. And if they play it right, they have a chance to get a lot of emagic-users to become protools-users. And for that they have to work hard....

I have ptle on winxp and it rocks. PC's now can run more plugins as mac's but there are less plugins available. But we do get the waves-stuff among others.......and its probably only getting better as MAX will be ported to windows some day....

It's a simply explained by the firewire ports.

Intel, like any company with competition wants any promotion it can get.

Sony and particularly the VAIO range of laptops are the only windows compatable computers that have come standard with firewire so it's like, Get one these "Vaio Laptop" and you can use one of these "Digi 002". By the way it's powered by one of these "Intel Pentium 4"

If there's another company other than apple & sony that make stylish, firewire equipped laptops I'd be surprised if it wasn't a PC card add on or the laptop in question was built like a brick.
