edit selection disappears when playback stops. what'd I do?!

I love when the functionalities you just magically count on suddenly disappear and you begin the mad scramble to find out what you accidentally toggled.

In this case, when I make a selection on a track and play it, as soon as I stop playback, the selection disappears and I have to re-select it.

NORMALLY (and happily) the selection will just stay there as I start and stop playback and whatever else.

Anyone know what I done did to change this?
