Default Machine Control-Cable Length etc.

Hi, I need some help. I'm setting up machine control for the first time and I'm having some problems. Here's my setup:

G4-Dual 1.25 (not FW800)
Mix+++
USD
OS X 10.2.8-Pro Tools 6.1
Machine Control 2.0 (demo mode for now)

SMPTE from BetaSP to USD
9 Pin from BetaSP - DB9 to miniDIN - Griffin Twin USB to Serial Converter (to the computers USB port)
Cable length from the BetaSP to The PT Rig is 100 feet...
Blackburst from House Sync to both the BetaSP and Video Ref in on the USD

My problem is PT gives me an Unable to Establish Comm. error whenever I try to playback. I am able to set 9-Pin Serial to Sony Machine Control on the right port of the Griffin and the node is set to UVW-1800. Sometimes it won't let me select the node, sometimes it will. What am I missing? Is my cable to long?

Any Help would be greatly apprecitated.

-mt

I have RS-422 (9pin) cables close to 100ft long and do not have any problems. I've used over 200ft cables with a MicroLynx without incident.

If you are using Serial timecode for positional reference you do not need to route the SMPTE from the BetaSP to your USD.

I know the Griffin isn't officially supported, but I do not know why.

Make sure you are using port 2 on the Keyspan. I don't remember why, but that was an issue for us.

Hmmm...that's a first, the port 2 issue.

Are you using a serial patchbay? Could you have a bad patch cable (sorry, got to ask, please don't get insulted)?

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried port 2, but still no luck. I have also tried with a DigiBeta and a DVCam machine. Is tehre some setting that I am missing? I'm at a total loss at this point.

Check the cable pinouts, make sure its not wired as a remote cable. Wiring diagram at the end of the manual.
