Default Psychedelic Mixes - Feedback Appreciated

I recently mixed an album for a local band here in Baltimore, MD. This was my first 'gig' as an engineer (I graduated form a recording school in October and am currently working as a Sound Preservation Engineer in Bethesda, MD).

The band performs covers of classic psychedelic songs. They recorded live into an Alesis ADAT-HD24 at a friend's house, and then I transferred the songs onto a firewire drive and mixed all 15 songs in Pro Tools LE at my home (see my signature for specs). I did my best to artisitically capture the retro psychedelic sound, so keep this in mind when giving a listen.

I just got my copy of the mastered album in today and thought I'd throw up a few songs. Unfortunately it seems that the band was lame when burning me this copy of the album, as some digital artifacts appear in a few songs. Anyways, any feedback is welcome to this newbie engineer. Hope you enjoy.

The Things!

Default Re: My First Album (as mixing engineer)

I just listened to "Psychotic Reaction" and "I just happen..."---

I think it sounds good overall. You really did a good job of making it sound "60's".

It sounds like you recorded the guitars and bass from the cabinet, and put them in the far left and far right of the mix. I think it is a good effect, but I probably would have given it a little less of a stereo field when the guitar does the solo in the first tune. I'm listening to it on AKG 240 headphones so the guitar really sticks out in the left during the solo. It's gets a little ear piercing at times (just during the solo in the left ear), but you may have not have mixed in headphones. The drums and bass are a little too covered up (in my opinion) during that section. Once everyone comes back in, it sounds like a really clean mix. It also sounds like you recorded the drums with 2 mics... which I think works really well with this group. I probably would have thrown a mic on the bass and snare, just for a little bit more punch. To me, the snare sounds a little distant, but that may have been your artistic interpretation. Overall, good job. I'm interested in hearing what others have to say.

Thanks for the feedback dalazz! I actually didn't track the songs, I was just hired after the fact to mix them. I wish I could have spent more time on the songs to do 'artisitic' panning and what-not, but the band just didn't afford me the time to do anything other than standard mixing. I look forward to advancing my techinques in the future though. Thanks again.

Cool 60's ambience, clean mix, nice job.

The rest depends on goal, taste and limits.

I too, might have put the guitar a little less harder to the left and -1 to 3db just to let the drum come tru a little bit more.
