Default Mic gain level setting with Mbox 3rd gen

Hey guys I have a quick question. I have an Mbox 3rd gen and currently I will be using it to record vocals with my mic. I just have the standard condenser mic that needs phantom. Anyway, is there like a general rule of thumb when setting levels for mic gain? like should you not go past the halfway mark, or stop at a certain meter color or what? I mean I know not do record anything in the red but I would just like advice on how to fine tune gain settings to get the best vocal sound.

Personally, I record with peaks around -6 dB.

Cheers,

Cheers,
Is that just using the microphones regular settings, or do you have a -db switch turned on the mic itself?

That's setting the gain on the incoming mic signal so that the signal peaks at -6dB.

Cheers,
