Hello. I am new to the forum. My name is Josh, and I am a long time Pro Tools user. I recently purchased the new Allen and Heath ZED R-16 Firewire Console and am using it with my 003 Rack. I am using the 8 Analogue outputs from the 003 and going to the 1-8 Line inputs on the console. However, when I use the ADAT output from the 003 and use it with the 9-16 ADAT inputs on the console, I am unable to get any signal on the board. I have the Clock source in Pro Tools set to Optical and the R-16 Clock set to ADAT. Is my routing wrong, or could this be a simple setting in Pro Tools to utilize the ADAT outputs on the rack? This is my first time using ADAT connections with a pro tools system, so any input, advice, or ideas are definitely welcomed and appreciated!!
Thanks in advance!! -Josh |

Hey Josh, welcome to the DUC. You are sort of breaking new ground using that mixer so some experimentation may pay off. I think you need to clock the 003 to the Zed(i.e. use the Zed as master and set protools to SYnc to ADAT). This will require a lightpipe "cable" from an ADAT OUTPUT of the Zed to the ADAT INPUT of the 003. If you don't have a master clock, you will get clicks and pops in your audio. My first inclination would be to use Zed inputs 1-8 via lightpipe to the 003(and set up the input paths in the I/O setup page>input tab). Then run your 8 outputs from protools into the ADAT 9-16(out of the 003 and into the Zed channels 9-16. A few things to think about(and know that I do not use any mixer in my setup); audio via the ADAT out(and thru any converters) may or may not be in correct phase with audio out via the 003 analog outputs. This is only an issue if you try to combine both paths(which may cause phasing sounds depending on the signal). You may want to run a session and try both signal paths to see if one sounds better than the other. If they both sound fine, the mixer may be more trouble than benefit. Let your ears be the judge.

When you set the pro tools clock to optical, PT is expecting a clock to come in on the optical port. Since you don't have anything plugged in to that, you have no clock for the 003.
You have two choices here: 1) make 003 the master clock -set the 003 to internal clock -set the ZED to ADAT clock -connect the ADAT output from the 003 to the ADAT input on the ZED 2) Make the ZED the master clock -set the 003 to optical (ADAT) clock -Set the ZED to internal clock -connect the ADAT output from the 003 to the ADAT input on the ZED (for your audio signals) -connect the ADAT output from the ZED to the ADAT input on the 003 (for clock) You could also get signal if you set both to internal clock, but you will get occasional pops in the audio stream - so don't do it that way. |

Also be aware that the ADAT outputs in Pro Tools use channels 9 through 16 and the outputs of any tracks that you want to be sent via ADAT need to be set to those outputs.
Disregard if you already have that set up. And yes, if you are only going one way, PT software needs to be set for internal clock and your mixer to ADAT input. |

Awesome! Thanks for the help and warm welcome to the forum. I was able to get it to work when setting Pro Tools clock to OPTICAL and the ZED clock to Internal. However, I should have mentioned this in the first place. I also have an Apogee Rosetta 200 that I am running the main outs of the ZED into the Analogue Inputs of the 200. Then going SPDIF INPUT into the 003. I would much rather clock off of the Apogee for all my sessions. What would be the proper setup for me to be able to run my studio this way! Thanks again for all the great advice!! It is very much appreciated!!

Whatever you do, there must be a single master clock so you will need to look over your options with the gear you have. Maybe you can clock the 003 to SPDIF and then run a wordclock cable from the Apogee to the Zed? I don't know what you have for available connections.

Set the 003 to clock to SPDIF (it will get it's clock from the Apogee)
Set the ZED to clock to ADAT/Optical (it will get it's clock from the 003...which is clocked to the Apogee...). |
