Why don't you get a demo and try it?
We can discuss "does it...?" all day long.
Instead try it and see.

It's a panner & level at the end of the day. It does what you tell it to do. In the case above, bleed some of left and right reverb into the center.

Yes, many feature film stereo downmixes, no problems at all.

I don't necessarily want an additional plugin, if I can do the same with PT's own panner.

You can’t, which is why we are suggesting it.

Isn't the divergence adjustment on my Pro Tools surround panner doing this? Bleeding into center speaker.

Spanner is my go to also. Use it in Atmos at well to deal with overlaps of object etc.

You have zero control of the levels on L, C, R with the divergence control. If you bleed to C, you are losing L and R. Then you have to compensate levels with another plugins to push L/R. And down the rabbit hole you go.
Along this same path you could create a send to sub-channel C. But once again, a pain.
Spanner is a great utility plugin (not to mention some of the rotational possibilities with the accompanying tablet app) but there are many ways to skin this cat. (Sorry cats!)

In Protools you can only pan mono or stereo tracks outputting to quad or 5.1 (or something bigger than mono/stereo).
In Protools you can not re-pan a 5.1 into 5.1 (like re-pan the surrounds a bit more towards the fronts). Spanner allows you to do stuff like this.

Also beware, Altiverb has buggy automation when using the 'center level'. It needs to pass an automation breakpoint in order to get the correct setting. When you reopen the session the level is at default (if I remember correctly) and only jump to the correct setting when it passes a breakpoint.
This might be fixed by now though, I hardly use Altiverb, but it was there for while.
