VSL strings bow noise, I need guidance please
Hello,
I tried all the week the appassionata strings included in Epic Orchestra (Bundled with VePro 5). I am in trouble with the bow noise ! I find it really loud in the upper register of the violin ! To get rid of this noise (total), I tried an EQ at ~ 500hz, Q= 6 and gain = -24dB ; The bow noise is gone, but as intended, the timbre of the violin is totally destroyed........ If I let this noise in and add a reverb, I've got the dry noise + the reverberated noise !!!! I tried filtering the reverb too without success. It's not easy because Epic Orchestra is mapped across the keyboard from bass to violin, and when I'm filtering something, every instruments are impacted. 1) The strings of Epic Orchestra are solo instruments, is it the reason of the excessive bow noise ? 2) Is it the same thing with Solo, Orch and App strings big collection ? 3) What can I do to reduce a bit this noise without killing the timbre ? I know that bow noise is a part of the "realism" of this libray, but again, why is it so loud ? Any help appreciated, Ludo.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've never thought to this kind of tools... I guess I'd have to use it once the midi tracks are printed to audio ? I'm considering seriously that solution !

Meads, have you ever use Izotope's RX2 for this purpose ?
It's seems they're talking about sounds with "transient" for spectral repair (door slam, click etc....), I'm wondering if that will work with bow noise... maybe with denoise ? But demos are impressive anyway !

Re: VSL strings bow noise, I need guidance please
Alright,
I tried the demo of RX2 Advanced and it's working very well Deconstruct and denoise don't seem to be the right choice for this task. But the spectral repair is fantastic, even if I don't get everything; We can select a part of the audio in the spectrogram and preview either what we want to attenuate (the selected part to be processed) or the result ...very cool ! One downside is it's audiosuite only (or within the standalone app), but I don't know how it could be realtime anyway. It's going to be a lot of work I don't know if it's a common way to do it and if Spectral Repair is designed for this purpose but a noise is a noise isn't it ? 1) Should I be worried about something special like phase issue when we apply extreme EQing ? 2) I don't really understand the functionnal difference between the Spectral Repair and an EQ ? (while quality difference seems obvious) If someone knows, you're welcome , Ludo.

Re: VSL strings bow noise, I need guidance please
Spectral repair analyzes a part before and a part after a portion you want to be gone. You can select, how much audio before/after it should take into this process, and how it should weigh the audio before/after.
Based on this analysis it calculates what the selected part probably would consist of and does some kind of reconstruction. Doesn't always work, but very often it does an amazing job. It's more a rendered replacement of audio, than an EQ.

When I'm selecting a part in the lowest range of a note in the spectrogram, and I'm listening to this selection, I can clearly hear the "SHRRRR" of the bow; I guess I will have to experiment again to find the right balance between the original "noise" and a total suppression ... When I tried to "erase" the bow noise, every information of the original note seem here and untouched. I tried a reverb too and it was nice ! Ok, I must add that all of that is out of a mix context. I'm quite impressed, really

For me the RX2 package has payed for itself several times, now. It is capable of fantastic things, and it's my go to swiss army knife, whenever I need to repair something.
