Default RME FF800 & FW 1814

I am looking to increase my inputs from an AP 192. I am looking at the RME Fireface 800 for conversion and the M-Audio FW 1814 for more inputs into PTMP. Can the RME be used as a complete standalone in this setup?

1. you cannot use two interfaces simultaneously within pro tools. i am guessing that you are getting the 1814 to REPLACE the AP 192.

2. if you use the 1814 in "direct monitoring mode" then you can listen to whatever inputs are attached to it (which includes the 1814's analog inputs and any ADAT optical signals).

3. you can use the 1814's "mixer" feature to adjust volumes on those inputs you are listening to in direct monitoring mode while outside of pro tools (i.e. when pro tools is NOT running).

4. when you are in pro tools, you will NOT be able to use the direct monitoring mode (pro tools takes over the 1814's input and output faders).

5. my preference is to just stay within pro tools, and not mess with the direct monitoring features, because the "mixer" for the 1814 lacks eq and effects.

So there is no way to send audio into the FF as a STANDALONE unit, not as an interface then to the FW 1814. Thanks for the reply.

Direct monitoring works when in protools, I do it on every session. Doesn't work 100% correctly (my meters don't seem to work) but sound does come out correctly.

my direct monitoring within pro tools doesn't work for me.

i press the button on the front of the 1814, and it doesn't do anything (when pro tools is running).

the led does NOT go yellow.

it goes yellow when pro tools is not loaded though.

and yes, i have the button selector set to the "direct monitoring" function (i.e. - not using the button for the headphone function).

sometimes, the button doesn't work even outside of pro tools - usually, this behavior is after i've been inside pro tools for a long period - the button goes dead or something - not sure what's the deal with that one.

i've come to the point where i just settle with what i have, because it works, just not the way i want it to work.

at first, i was having issues with latency when recording guitar tracks using the 1814.

so i bought the blackbox and it solved my problem with latency, while at the same time giving me more amp models and effects, along with a foot pedal for expressiveness.

anyone that has suggestions as to how to get the direct monitoring when pro tools is running, please advise me - because that button on the 1814 just won't go yellow once pro tools is loaded.

if to increase inputs is the only goal, just add another AP192 card or 2496 card
