Default 002R + Preamp

Hey folks
I'm new to the whole macintosh/pro tools realm..i used to use a pc and various sonic foundry programs.
I want to hook my preamp into the signal line in inputs 5-8 so that i have 8 live mic inputs for recording full bands or really mik'd up drums...Curious to whether i should use the +4 dBv or -10dBu switch? Furthermore, i read that impedence pads would probably be good to use on the inputs when mik'ing drums. Is this the case? If so, why? and how many -db should i use?

Thanks a bunch
James

---I'm assuming that since the gain db for mic inputs 1-4 is 18db-65db that i would want to dump that down to +0db..and taht using line impedence pads would do the trick? For that usage, do you put the adapter between mic/cable or cable/input??

Set the sensitivity according to your preamp output sensitivity.

If you're unable to keep inputs from peaking then you need to use pads of some sort on inputs 1-4, either on the mic or inline. However if you are able to maintian -14dbfs nominal levels you do not need pads.(Note -14dbfs=0dbu for the 002/002R)

Thanks a lot man, you seem to be the well rounded knowledge bank.
Let me ask you another quick few.
How can i figure out if i'm at 0dBu on the rack? Is there a VU gauge or something?
Also, how do i determine the output signal of my preamp. It doesnt list the dBV or dBu anywhere that i can see?

Thanks again!
