Default Help needed in selecting a great pair of mic pres- style of V76 or 1073 on a budget.

Now that I finally got my converters, it's time for a pair of Mic Pre's. They will be used mostly for "acoustic guitar" and an occasional vox.

Budget is tight. I have the Control 24 so whatever pair I get would have to be a significant improvement over the Focusrites.
I don't know if that's possible with a under 1k price budget. Maybe I should wait till my
budget increases.

I have read up on the ART Tube MP Personal Tube Mic Preamp, GRACE DESIGN 101 MIC
PREAMP, Joe Meek and such. Am I wasting time with these guys?

Anyone know of a great pair of pres in the $500-1000 range that would compete with the big boys? I've had API's, Neve 1073's, Telefunken V76's, Avalon and Manleys in the past but all is gone now due to $$$. It's a drag but life goes on.

V76's and 1073's were my all time favorites. Would love to have something that comes close
to either of these.

Thanks.

Leon

Hi. I just posted a similar question about the Grace 101 yesterday. I got good responses here and offline about it and just ordered two. The 101 is considered to be a very transparent pre. You can get them in the $550 range.

HEY Mike,

Have you used the TAB stuff. Looks good but out of $ range for now. Are you a dealer?

I wouldn't press a click track with the Tube Mp, but you shuold try the 101. Also look at the Langevin stuff...It's CLOSE to your budget.

Speaking of Langevin, anyone tried their condenser?

Or check out the new Rupert Neve MPs. I've heard that they are out in some areas and are selling for around 500.00. Check www.recording.org for more info on this.

I'd check out the Langevin DVC- as I have said elsewhere, despite the somewhat limited eq, they are real nice sounding pres- very open very warm.
