Default Newbie questions re. file types and management

Some basic questions from a VI newbie.
I have successfully installed Structure Free and will probably upgrade to LE soon. Thanks to spkguitar’s excellent instructions I have those instruments located in the “C:\Program Files\Digidesign\Structure\Structure Factory Libraries\ Structure Free” folder. That’s all good, and works a treat, but of course I want more . . .

So from my MBox2 Factory bundle, I installed xpand, which works fine, and Sampletank 2, which also works fine, but I cant find it’s samples/patches.
Which brings me to my questions . . .

1. Do I need to run the xpand and Sampletank sample players to run their instruments, or can I access those instruments from within Structure?
2. What is the difference between a patch and a sample?
3. I am realising that all these formats have different filename extension. Can someone provide a list of the relevant extensions, eg. .patch, .ins, etc. so I can search for them with windows explorer?
4. Is it a good idea to move all the relevant patch and sample files into the “structure free” subfolder, or am I better to leave them in the default folders that were created when I installed the plugin applications?

Thanks
Mike

XPand is the only thing that can play the XPand content. I'm assuming that you are talking about Sampletank SE that comes free with PT? That content is also "locked" to that specific player. IIRC, the content for Sampletank SE is a separate install, but you definitely need to tell the plugin where the content is (even with the standard install). Instructions for doing that are in the basic installation instructions for Sampletank SE (should be included on the installation disk as a PDF).

Samples are just audio files. Patches can also be considered "presets". Patches can contain samples (depending on what virtual instrument you are using), but patches can also be just for settings for non-sampling virtual instruments.

For which instrument(s), specifically?

It depends; are you having problems running from the default locations? What "content" are you talking about?

I just thought a general list of file extensions for all flavours of patches and samples etc. might be a useful reference tool.

Cheers,
Mike
