-9171 and -9172 errors constant...Sandra attached

Since upgrading to 10.3 HDX, I've been plagued with 9171 and 9172 errors on one of our systems.

We will upgrade the RAM to 24gb...

PT: h/w buffer: 512, Host 7proc, cpu usage 99%, Delay comp: max, disk playback cache: 4gb, streaming buff: level 4

You have nothing to lose by updating to 10.3.4 so I would give that a go(normally I would recommend you image your system drive first, but maybe there's no point in imaging a bad setup). Then, looking at your RAM, I see its close but NOT a perfect match. I think 24GB is overkill and I would maybe buy 12GB(3x4) and make sure you have things in the correct slots for triple-channel operation(it may also be worth checking BIOS to see if RAM timings AND voltages are all correct for the exact RAM you have...er....WILL have)

If this RAM stuff is making you scratch your head, be aware that most(all?) X58 motherboards are designed to run triple-channel RAM, which requires 3(or 6) matching sticks for proper operation. Running any other number of RAM sticks will negate triple-channel and hurt performance(don't know if it would cause the errors).

Also, if you have anything on the firewire port(external hard drive?) be aware that SOME Asus VIA firewire controllers are not compatible with Pro Tools. While I own several FW drives, all my recording is done to internal SATA here.(FW drives are for backup and transfer only).

Using 7 proc, @ 99% may not be such a good idea. You are only leaving one virtual thread for the system. Try 5 or 6 @ 85% and see if this makes a difference.

Changed the RAM for triple channel (right slots, etc.), tried moving to 5, then 6 on the processors...even worse....

Don't tweek around slightly with the RTAS CPU allocation. The goal here is to give Pro Tools (not the plugins) access to as much CPU as it needs. You have only 4 physical cores, so set CPU = 3. So a whole physical core is left for Pro Tools, Try 2, Try 1.

What plugins are in use and how many? (native or AAX?) What if you try uninstantiating those plugins? What if you manually remove all plugins from their folders? Does everything else at least work? Put plugins back in batches and see if you can find a culprit there.

Is your system optimized with *all* (every last one no matter how inconvenient) standard optimizations applied? Double check to make sure. Antivirus totally disabled or uninstalled, WiFi disabled, any disk indexing software disabled, etc. etc. Failure to do all this seems the cause in at least some of these systems.

I do appreciate all of the help here, painstakingly going through all of the suggestions...here's the basic fact from a paying customer who's spent over 20K with this company...

Up until upgrading from PT 8 HD, I actually had a good working system. Then, the install and minor upgrades of PT 10 HDX and the IO box, the system constantly crashes...same plugins, folks, same computer, no other software issues..heck, my plugins are more stable than the core system.

Now, there are attempted "work arounds" on Avid forums, etc...THEREFORE, I am not the only one having the very same issues. As a former Software Product Director in a side-life, I cannot imagine ever authorizing release of software with such, obviously, untested dynamics. Further, IF such things were occurring, all Development would be redirected to figuring out what the heck is going on...until resolved.

Sorry for the vent, but the software's behavior is now interrupting my business.

And please hold off on the "I'm not having any issues"...great for you, try running a high-volume commercial studio, then get back to me.

But those "same plugins" that "seem more stable than Pro Tools" are likely a great place to start with debugging. Exactly what plugins? Are they all up to date? On the latest AAX DSP or AAX native versions of whatever is available or latest RTAS if not? And what plugin testing/exclusion have you tried?
