Default Standalone Play setup

I have Play and I am trying to get it to work as a standalone player on the same machine as my Pro Tools HD. I got the IAC bus working, but I can't seem to get the routing right for Optical output.

I have a lightpipe cable coming out of my MacPro (digital Output-Optical). I set Built In Digital Output in Audio/MIDI Setup. I connect this to my 192 I/O Input. The input I picked is the Optical Input next to the SPIDIF and Sync Connectors. This is on the right side looking from the back. I also tried the ADAT Input in the middle of the back of the 192. I select the input that shows up in I/O setup and create an input path. I use that input as the input on a Aux or Instrument input.

When I play notes I can see Play responding, but I do not hear output. Any suggestions as to how to get this to work?

Is there a reason you can't use it as an RTAS plugin ?

I'm just a mere hobo, but if you haven't already make sure your optical input is set to SPDIF not ADAT.

Thanks Lincoln, that worked. But, it means (I Think) that you have only one stereo output from the Standalone back into your interface.

Is it possible to make the ADAT Optical input work coming from the Optical out of the MacPro so you get multichannel audio out of the standalone?

As to why I am doing this instead of RTAS, I am not. I just want to see how to make it work, and to see if it makes a difference in performance.

Glad you had some success w/ that.

Yup - The optical out of the Mac Pro is stereo so you will not be able to do multi channel out with that set up.

You'd need another interface (1 for PLAY 1 for PT)

These are the kind of limits that have made PT almost obsolete for me.

(lizard) I used to use play standalone alot with PT not because it didn't work as an RTAS plug in but because after 10+ instances it would cripple PT.

With multiple standalones I was able to get better results.

Then after switching to logic, which took a while to get comfortable with, I was able to use my 003r as the audio out in PLAY - and the interface in Logic making it possible for multiple outs with the standalone version.

I could physically route the outs to ins on the interface and it worked great.

Then Logic 9.1.1 came out in 64 bit and I have tossed VE ensemble pro and all standalones and run everything native.

It's ridiculous. Hundreds of VI's - it's pretty sweet.

Now remember I'm just a mere hobo - And I'm only speaking for my needs, workflow - Pro Tools is still amazing etc etc...

Good luck.
