GUI short freeze and beachball still on 2021.7
When i updated to 2021.6 I got the wellknown short freeze Challenge several times each your (maybe 15-20 times pr hour) I tried to solve the issue but ended up downgrading to 2021.3. Then everything worked perfect. Then came 2021.7. I hoped it was fixed. But it is exactly the same problem. Is there anybody who has had the problem and fixed it ?
I am using: Mac OS Catalina 10.15.5 3,4 ghz quad core Intel core i5 24 gb ram Radeon pro 570 4 gb Last edited by jkd62; 08-31-2021 at 03:29 PM. |

Re: GUI short freeze and beachball still on 2021.7
I don't know if this is a fix or not, but a couple of us did a clean install of the OS (in our case it was Big Sur) from scratch (not factory install). Then a fresh install of Protools 2021.7 (not upgrade) and have not seen the freezes or beach balls. Given that each user has different plugins, it is not clear if a certain plugin is possibly causing the freezes or beach balls so YMMV. If you have a spare SSD and the time, it might be worth a try.

Re: GUI short freeze and beachball still on 2021.7
There are some people here who will tell you to reinstall your OS. It doesn't fix it. I tried. Running an M1 macbook air.
There's at least one person here persistently telling people to do a clean install on the basis that a theoretical test-session recording blank audio works fine. I think in reality, those tests doesn't correlate with how people actually use pro tools. In my experience, the problem seems to be triggered by scrolling around in a larger session. GUI/meters gets sluggish, and eventually beachballs. 2021.7 is better than 2021.6 for this, but it still exists. I'd strongly recommend to disregard the suggestions that a clean install will fix 2021.7 . You'll likely commit to a lot of downtime with no results to show for. Submit a support ticket to avid, and wait for the next PT update which hopefully fixes it once and for all. |

I don't create very large session anymore as a hobbyist, but I loaded the Avid demo session which is pretty big (to me anyways) with audio tracks, midi tracks, using virtual instruments, etc. It all plays back with plugins and automation fine on my system. No freezing or beach balls. I'm not on an M1 (2017 MBP i7). It does seem that the M1 Macs are more prone to the freezing and beachballs, but that (Mac mini with M1 and 16 GB Ram) is exactly what JFreak (corrected reference) was meticulously testing with the clean install of the OS and Protools and he reports no freezing or beach balls so far. I agree that it is a time consuming process. Which is why I suggest if someone had a spare SSD, it might be worth a try. If it works on their spare SSD, then proceed to do the same to their primary drive. If it doesn't solve the problem with a spare SSD, then it probably will fail on their primary drive also. In which case, reverting to 2021.3 or earlier is the viable solution until the next release hopefully works. Troubleshooting is a pain and not everyone has the time or mindset for it. Do what works for you.

Re: GUI short freeze and beachball still on 2021.7
Have you done a clean install to freshly emptied system storage? It makes a world of difference...
I myself have a fully loaded M1 Mac Mini for testing purposes. Clean install and zero trouble. Now I am quite confident my hardware has nothing special in itself, but the clean install makes wonders.
