HD|Expansion Chassis Fan Replacement Possibe l?
The internal fan with heatsink over the Intel Celeron chip is soooo LOUD ! Any way to replace that ? Doing a search I found that the installed fan can be had for $2.00 on eBay. I am clueless as to what heatsink/fan to even get, anyone in the PC world know, Rail maybe ?

Re: HD|Expansion Chassis Fan Replacement Possibe l?
Yes.. you can replace it with a Zalman fan. I've found that the loudest fans are actually the chassis fans at the front of the chassis though.. and those can also be replaced. Check with Digidesign about your warranty though. I personally wish they'd install quieter fans from the factory... although one of the advantages of the Expansion/HD is that it can be relocated to a different room.
Look for a socket 478 CPU fan and 120mm chassis fan at www.quietpcusa.com Rail

HI Rail, how about this one ?
Zalman I don't know about your chassis but my internal fan is so loud, if I unplug it, the unit is almost quiet, this little fan is like a vacuum cleaner. MIne is a Cool Master CM12V, same as yours ? |

Re: HD|Expansion Chassis Fan Replacement Possibe l?
That fan is correct for the socket -- just make sure it'll fit in the chassis itself. I haven't opened mine in a while.. although putting in a Zalman is on my TODO list... one day when I have some time
When replacing the old CPU fan.. make sure to apply the silicon grease correctly. Rail

Re: HD|Expansion Chassis Fan Replacement Possibe l
The chassis fan is actually fairly quiet. We went with a Yate Loon fan that has an appropriate balance of low noise versus adequate airflow. It is on par with a Nexus 120MM fan, which is dead quiet, but has a higher CFM rating. We would not recommend replacing the chassis fan as it was chosen for a reason.
Replacing the CPU heatsink and fan would likely invalidate your warranty, so unless that period has expired you probably don't want to touch it. However, as Rail said, Zalman makes great products. A couple of us PC geeks in the test department prefer the Thermalright XP-90 with the Nexus 92MM fan, however. Again, any modifications to your chassis are not officially supported by Digi and may void your warranty. Digi ETS |
