In your price range, I'd look at the UA Solo610 or the Grace 101. I haven't used the Cascade C77 but I have a DR-2 and a pair of Fathead II's and they all are excellent on guitar amps, fiddle/violin, mando, banjo and sax(not quite as good as a Royer, but very close at 85% less money).

Or for that money, you can check out the two channel dav, which is quite clean, but not clinical.

Y'ur killing me Albee... I got curious about the UA and went for a look-see on the internet.. after about an hour I was sitting at Rupert Neve's looking at the Portico II and trying to figure out how to explain to my wife that I 'needed' two of these...

Akkk... I'm gonna be useless for a month now.

Danny-

For me, the conversation usually goes something like this:
"...no, really honey, it's IMPORTANT that I spend thousands of dollars on something that sounds almost exactly like something that costs half as much. Because, well...you see, ummm..."

I have a audio fanatic 'friend' that blew his wedding dinner budget on a $10 000 dollar preamp for his $50 000 dollar audio playback system. No dinner for the wedding guests, just one pcs coffee and coniac. We (his "friends") almost felt like revoking his wedding gift.

They're a little dark for vocals(unless dark is what you want......)
