+1 to Keybeeetsss

I like gentle reverb on my vox. Not to greedy. To big a pre delay means it sounds to far away as does to much dense reverb (reverb tail).

I find big verbs lose a sound in the mix (sometimes this maybe what you want however).

Happy tweaking.

A:)

Natural reverb!

Find a cathedral and record your vocals there.

Zackly. I had a producer ask me once what reverb I thought was used on an Anonymous 4 recording! They record direct to stereo, mastered with no fx, not even EQ or compression. Just four women's voices in a large, gorgeous space. Ahhhhhhh!

It's kinda funny. Convolution verbs, which sound wonderful and natural, have become cheap and therefore popular. In response, it has begun to become trendy to mix dry. ::shrug:: Plato said, "Whatever is beautiful is difficult." Correspondingly, whatever becomes easy is no longer beautiful.

I, one time @my Nashville spot, were doing a session where the artist producer really had no clue of what they wanted; they kept sayin, "Can u make it really far away" which really wasn't workin for the song, so I told them that the intern had to put some more air in the reverberator since we had already used so much of it up, but @ the time he wasn't available to do it

They said, OH, well thatz fine then; that may be enough because we don't want him to have to do all that

That's great! It's like back in the console days when some engineers used to reserve a knob somewhere that did nothing, and they would turn it any time the client requested something where they clearly didn't know what they were talking about. You know "more jungle on the drums" or "can you make it kind of like shiny" or something. Almost always made them happy.

We call that the DFA pot. "Can you give that a bit of DFA to sweeten it"

To dearon80: It is weird how things are being mixed drier (something I even do my self now). I love recording in beautiful natural environments. I am lucky enough to record in Saint Georges Hall in Bristol several times a year where the acoustics are world renowned. Have even recorded an impulse response to use for deconvolution but very rarely use it. I suppose part of the liveness of the performance in a space where no 'control room' is being used influences the use of reverb (i.e. no added reverb for an acoustic singular performance in a reverberant space, as it is washed in it and the performers react to a lovely acoustic and perform differently; Over dubbed in a recording studio with many takes etc... means reverb is added but not to much so as not to colour the performance (as the performance has been done dry in effect)).

A:)

This is turning into a fun thread
Anyway, to actually try and toss in my 2 cents, it'll take a dollar. Choosing a verb(or if even to use one) sure depends on the musical style. With more traditional stuff(R&B, Blues, Bluegrass) I really like the EMT plate IR in TL Space, but most times I use the IK Classik verb's Plate algo. Usually have to shorten the 3.1 sec default time. I try to bring it up just till I hear it, and then back it down 3-5db(I love verb, but in Nashvillem they keep tossing towels at me).

In the event of a Julio(Eglesias, that is), your seat cushion may be used as a floatation device(a TC M5000 dual engine with 12 seconds of verb on BOTH engines......)

Keybeeetsss is right, there's no one reverb that "does it all". It really depends on the effect you want to achieve.
