Funny how the PC 32 track beta was top secret, and limited to only a select few. And it was quite difficult to become one of those select few. But for Mac... It's a simple download available to all! Of course, the 32 track cat is out of the bag already, so no need for secrecy I guess.

Just an observation.

Yup. Your right.
I noticed that too but I figure it's
because they almost have it done
because there are less variables with the Mac.

But it is a slap.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">not at all true. all you needed to beta test 5.3 for windows xp was the appropriate operating system (windows xp pro OR home), a 001 or AMIII and an internet connection. it was offered to everyone in the same way the mac beta has been, only that there was a NDA involved, so as to protect new feature secrecy.

My take on this is that Digi is calling the 32-track upgrade a "beta" because they do not plan to officially support it on the Mac 9.2.x OS. So Digi is able to offer 32 tracks to Mac users while they wait for OSX, where it will be "officially" supported. I suppose Digi decided to have compassion on Mac users and allay their "pain and suffering", as it was too much for them knowing that this major feature was already available on the PC over on the "dark side". So, I think Digi did the right thing. Besides, it could have caused an uprising over there.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Nope. The 5.3.1 XP beta was only available to a select few that were hand picked by the Digi e-beta team. They had to be contacted by e-mail (which didn't work a lot of the time) and then wait for the team to approve them. Then electronically sign an NDA and then, if selected, the team would send information as to how to privately log-in and get the needed files. Also, the beta was closed to any new users with fewer than 75 testers.

All the Mac guys have to do is click and download and agree to a standard licensing agreement. Available, no questions asked, to all of the millions of Mac users out there. Not the same at all.

Mike,

The Windows beta program was for the 5.3.1 version of the Pro Tools and Pro Tools LE software. This was a fairly major release with a bunch of code changes and new features. Consequently, we needed a more thorough and controlled testing program.

The only major change in the Mac PTLE Beta software is the increase to 32 tracks. Other than that, it contains the existing 5.1.1 (or 5.2.1) feature set.

Oh cool.
So it's only on or two lines of code.
Why even have a test program?
