Go to www.motu.com. It's Mark of the Unicorn and they make Digital Performer software as well as a slew of Hardware. Prices are great and the value is very good. They are becoming the standard at smaller studios because of the price/value point. The 828 is a little more than the Mbox, but is firewire and is spec'd closer to th e001. The 896 is a 8 in/out 24 bit 96k firewire box. The good thing about the motu stuff is you can stack them, so 3 or more interfaces is possible for larger studios. Digital Performer is also great software without the track limit. I have mixed 56 tracks projects with 20 plug ins and 16 aux tracks in DP.

A plane??

Who could possibly mix on a plane?

Maybe just for scratch stuff, real rough, but cmon, is there a worse sonic environment to mix in?

I would not trust anything I did on a plane (even in first class ) unless I checked in a real monitoring environment first.

Never actually mixed on a plane, but I have done plenty of editing, comping, etc....Still, that rolling 001 rack would not work. Or at the beach, or driving on a long trip...all of these places my TiBook and Mbox have been happily working. Ever do vocals in a Range Rover? I have....

I just got a Ti Book and M Box to use to record vocals in diffrent places. I love it. I don't run any plug ins I do all of the mixing on the 001 system.

Check the ibook too... if you are going to mix on a bigger system later, why spend an extra 1000-1500 when the ibook should be fine.
I can record 24 live tracks continuous for 3 hours and have no performance problems, but i use Motu 896's and DP. See if someones gotten good performance with and ibook + mbox.

hey mikcheck,
if you'r gonna mix in another system ('puter) better get a cheap ibook instead.

my icebook 500 gives me 4 ptreverbs in logic platinum with the emi2|6 audio interface. no problemo if it's just tracking (to the internal hd) while playing several tracks.

and another reason to go icebook: NOISE.

the Ti is a very noisy thing (to me is uselessa as a mobile studio just for that reason). with my icebook500 (which doenst have ANY fan noise) i can track a voice with the computer nearby.

a small warning though. the previous 500 and 600 icebooks never had the fan running, but it seems that the newer 700 has it sometimes, at least under os x (probably beacause quartz is making the gpu work the whole time)

my .002 euros

You're right, my 700 has the fan going on occasion, but only in OS X. 9 is fine.
