Why doesn't a wolf's howl echo?

I was watching a little Animal Planet last night, and they mentioned this. Can anyone explain?

Wolves like open spaces. Not much sense howling if the sound doesn't travel across the plain to your neighbors.

It's just that, after hearing a wolf howl in the dark, in the woods,alone, most people don't stick around long enough to hear the return...

Actually, according to animal planet "the wolf's howl is at a precise frequency that doesn't echo across canyons, so that other wolves can be sure of the direction of the howl, and locate the wolf."

Maybe what they mean is that this certain frequency, over long ranges, somehow cancels out its own echo. A phase cancellation, perhaps?

I don't buy it. I have wolf sound FX that have echoes. I agree with what someone else said. most of the time, the are in areas you don't hear echoes anyway.

Also, there always all kinds of natural reverb on wolf howls, which disproves the "frequency" theory.

Well, they've dispelled the myth about duck quacks. Maybe the wolves thought they'd try and start their own little joke on acoustics...or maybe they just want to steal some BBC coverage away from their favorite meal

Ok... that's FUNNY - "a day in the life of a session duck" with studio pictures and everything, I'll bet that Duck gets more sessions then most accordian players !

What I read = a Wolfs howl, does not echo, due to the pitch and timbre.a ducks quack is the same, however this is due to the actual frequency of the note, rather than the timbre/pitch.
