Default Noise on Mbox after startup

After starting up my PB4 with Mac OS 9.2.2, there´s loud noise coming from the Mbox.
Playing back a sessions audio file results in something like "modulated noise".
After switching the SampleRate-Setting from 44.1 to 48 kHz and back or from internal sync to external sync (without having anything connected) and back, everythings working fine now.

Can anybody confirm this?
Is this intended?
