Default 2021.10 still unusable on MacBook Pro M1

Hello,

Just wanted to see if anyone has a solution for this.

My scenario:

PT 2021.3.1 is working great on my M1. No problems at all.
I run some big mixing sessions but no problems with 2021.3.1.

Same sessions with PT 2021.10 (and 2021.6 and 7) instantly chokes. I can maybe play two seconds and it halts.

Of course it only shows 4 cores and not 8 on 2021.10.

I guess I'm stuck since the eissions in question are quite big but just wondered if anyone had the same "problem"?

Thanks, guys!

Persen

I had all the morning running different sessions (with and without video) on my Mac mini M1 and so far it runs great.

Try to trash preferences and look for plugins that can cause it.

Try dropping your UAD gear first to narrow down the possible problems. If it works with internal audio and does not work with UAD, you know where to point your finger.

If it still does not work with internal audio, make a clean install. M1 working very well here, so it is not a PT problem. You need to get rid of as many random things as possible. Clean install does that.

Factory install is NOT a clean install. It is simply put an image put in there in the factory.

I thought clean install referred only to software. Are you saying it's necessary to reinstall the OS when buying a new Apple laptop?

That is what I do every time. Just to get a stable starting point. With PT you want to get rid of anything random, and factory install is random thing.

I've come across similar things and found old PT Prefs files to be the culprit in several instances. When updating the PT app, it's very important to trash PT Prefs and reset all of it manually. If you use a new version of PT with Prefs created by an older version things can get hairy.

Weird. Well, my 16Max was purchased by my employer, who will be installing Kanji and Office and such on it before they bring it to me. So, I guess I'll ask them to reinstall Monterey first and see what they say.

two separate conversations:
-stability. 2021.6/7 was not usable on my M1 machine. May have been Waves plugs, I updated everything at once so I'm not sure what fixed it...sorry. But 2021.10/Waves V13/M1 is finally stable enough to use. Tons of other plug vendors in the mix as well, was working well all day.
2021.7 is stable on my Intel Mac, I haven't had any Intel 2021.10 time yet.
-processing power...haven't benchmarked 2021.3.1 M1 vs 2021.10 M1 but it would be interesting to see if 2021.3.1 still allowed for more plugs before caving. One would hope once PT is native on it will outperform all previous versions on M1 anyway so it's only a matter of time. I'm loving this machine and support keeps getting better all the time.

As much as I normally agree with Janne on things, I'm going to disagree here, a factory macOS install *is* a clean install. It is exactly the bits you get if you do a reinstall, either from a recovery volume or the internet (as long as the version is the same).

If you buy a used Mac and the (non-Apple) seller tells you it's a factory install or has been wiped, don't trust them for many reasons, including incompetence to maliciousness. Wipe that Mac yourself and do your own clean install (personally I'd clobber the recovery partition as well and reinstall everything from a download).

If the Mac has been used for anything else before you get it go ahead and wipe it yourself. If you have regressive IT procedures where you can't manage your own DAW computers then talk to IT about your special needs. Any decent IT organization should be used to dealing with special needs like this.

A common mistake Mac users make is starting off with a clean system and then destroying it by using the System Migration utility to migrate old broken drivers and other junk onto the new clean system. Don't use System Migration (aka Mangler) Utility to move apps or drivers, reinstall them all hand, checking you have the latest/compatible version as you go. If you need to using the System Migration Utility to move user Accounts is safer, but even then you can end up with problems like incompatible app preferences, it's better to just manually move stuff, but takes just a little Mac/UNIX knowledge, especially to get user/group IDs matching on both systems.

Windows is a completely different mess, most PC OEMs load up their systems with so much crapware. First thing I do to every Windows PC is to wipe it and reinstall Windows from an installer downloaded from Microsoft (possibly throwing away the OEM's Windows license). I manually install any drivers needed, don't let Windows just find drivers, picking the best ones from say GPU manufacturers etc. And I keep the OEM image around in case I can't find drivers etc. that work I can refer back to that. A lot of work, maybe, but you end up with a system that works and you know inside and out.
