Default Aggregate device w/ Apogee Ensemble & Firestudio?

Hi guys,

I am working to setup an Apogee Ensemble and a Presonus Firestudio as an aggregate device on os x 10.6.6 with protools 9.1.

I have setup the "protools aggregate I/O" in audio MIDI setup and set the "use" to the Apogee and the Firestudio. I have "resample" selected next to each one. The Ensemble is setup as the clock in the aggregate device.

Next, the Apogee is cabled into the mac, then the firestudio into the apogee, with firewire cables. When I open up sound setup in system prefs, and set the I/O to the Protools aggregate I/O, the input meter reads input from the Firestudio.

Ok, so that's set. Now I go into Protools, open setup/playback engine, set the playback to Protools Aggregate I/O. Now I open I/O, go to input. I've got a set of analog ins (8, the Apogee), then optical, then 10 more analog inputs - the Firestudio. I put an M onto each of the analog ins, because they're all mono ins, and save the settings.

Then I go into Protools, but when I set the input on the channel strip to be one of the inputs on the Presonus, I get some odd input level, which doesn't really seem to be audio. The levels jump up only slightly when checking the mic, and nothing records on the channel strip.

So I'm wondering, have I missed something here? I believe I have this done properly, but I haven't done this many times, and never with Protools 9 (since it's new). I would love some input, if anyone has it. Thank you!

You shouldn't. The clock master should not have "resample" selected.

Frankly, I would make the Ensemble clock master and sync the Firestudio via word or S/PDIF and not use the resample function at all.

Ok, got it. So set the Apogee as master clock in the Aggregate device, turn off resample on both, run SPDIF between the two units, and that should work? Thank you!
