Default 16 channels of ADAT i/o from an un-expanded 192

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Am wondering whether an un-expanded 192 will allow 16 channels of ADAT lightpipe - via using both the enclosure optical port and that on the supplied Dig i/o card? If yes, how to configure in 'hardware' page.

Or will I have to dig deep for another Dig i/o card?

Any help gratefully received.

Welcome to the DUC, GFK.

First, you’re not being clear as which “192” you refer. To get the best help possible around here (and elsewhere, for that matter) it pays to be very specific. Since you make mention of the fact that you’re dealing with an “un-expanded 192,” we’ll assume it’s the (flagship) 192 I/O.

As the manual will tell you (download it, if you don’t have it at hand), the 192 I/O features two sets (Input and Output) of optical ports. The first is found on the (standard) Digital I/O card; the second is featured among the “Enclosure” connections.

1) Connect a pair of optical cables (for Input and/or Output, as needed) to each set of ports described above.

2) Launch ProTools.

3) From “Setups” (on your menu bar), choose “Hardware…”

4) Select your interface in the small left-hand window.

5) Select the “Digital” tab.

6) Select “ADAT 1–8” inside the “Input Format” box.

7) Select the “Main” tab.

8) On the right-hand side of things, inside a small box labeled “Digital Format,” select AES/EBU. (To be accurate, just make sure you DO NOT select “Optical (S/PDIF)”).

Now…

9) From the Input and Output channel pop-up menus, select the physical ports (listed in pairs) exactly like this:

Input
ADAT 1–2
ADAT 3–4
ADAT 5–6
ADAT 7–8
Optical 1–2 (ADAT)
Optical 3–4 (ADAT)
Optical 5–6 (ADAT)
Optical 7–8 (ADAT)

Output
Digital 1–2 (all formats)
Digital 3–4 (all formats)
Digital 5–6 (all formats)
Digital 7–8 (all formats)
Optical 1–2 (ADAT)
Optical 3–4 (ADAT)
Optical 5–6 (ADAT)
Optical 7–8 (ADAT)

10) I urge you to read the 192 I/O’s manual (it’s a short read) to understand the functional differences between the two optical ports.

11) Last but not least, be sure to select the appropriate sample rate, and that things are clocked properly.

IHTH.

Thanks Andre. Much appreciated. Take your point about being specific - so shall be in future posts.

As you've guessed the 192 in question is the 192 - not the 192D.

Best regards.

I use 16 channels of ADAT on the 192, and there are a few things you need to be aware of.

1. If u only have a 192 as ur only interface and monitor through it, u will need 2 channels out of the 16 total outputs to be set to analog for the main outs, leaving you with 14 channels of ADAT outputs total.

2. 8 of the 16 ADAT channels available in the 192 are seated on a non-removable digital expansion card and features realtime sample frequency conversion, while the last 8 channels are integrated inside the unit itself WITHOUT realtime sample frequency conversion posibility. This means that if u send 16 ADAT streams in 44.1khz into the 192 with a session running in 48khz, it will only be the 8 channels going into the expansion card that will run at the correct 48khz sample rate inside ur session, while the the remaining 8 channels will still play at 44.1khz - ie. not being usable. If u use 16 channels of input u have to keep the samplerate at the same frequency inside the session and at the source of the streams to avoid this problem.

I thought that the built-in optical port on the 192 was only two-channel (S/PDIF).

Thanks for pointing this out.
