How long before PT9 goes fully X64 Native and builds in VST support ?
Hi all
No doubt the move to a Native [ non-hardware-locked ] PT9 is a *massive* move by Avid - they are to be congratulated. I'm wondering though about 2 key things:- => firstly, surely a fully X64 Native verison cannot be that far away ? Do people here think we will see it as a 9.x release or do you think we will have to wait until Version 10 or > later ? => secondly, why still no native-built-in VST support ? Again, I can only see adding VST support as making PT even more appealing to exisiting non-PT users - surely adding native VST support in to PT is a win/win all-round ? Am I totally off the mark here ? Thx, Ben |

I believe that 64-bit is coming. How soon I don't know. I wouldn't hold my breathe on the VST thing though. It could happen but I'm not betting on it happening any time soon.

Re: How long before PT9 goes fully X64 Native and builds in VST support ?
I don't think 64bit support is lurking just around the corner. As far as VST support goes I wouldn't hold my breath. In the meantime we have VST2RTAS wrapper and it works pretty well. Of course I would like to see both of these things at some point. I would think the rewriting the RTAS engine would be a better place to spend the development dollars in between now and when Windows 8.0 drops. Win 8 is rumored to be 64bit only so at some point in the next year or two they are going to have to make a native 64bit recode a priority.
Or they could suprise us like they did with PT9 and just drop it.

Why adopt the competitor's format when you're kicking their butt? Developers will simply need to write for RTAS if they want a piece of the giant PT9 pie.

I'm sure there will be no VST support.

64bit will come, ...
VST or AU needs to come - it is fairly easy now with coreaudio/ASIO support to do - eventually they need to do it because RTAS performance is nowhere compared to AU/VST in the instruments dept., ... AVID will and needs to wake up even they still play politics, ... my2cts, agradl |

I think fully X64 Native will be soon.
for the VST support I am not sure if this will happen because we have VST to RTAS adapter and even I see most of plugins new version support RTAS, so more likely it will just push to improve RTAS engine. |

They are going to push for it because of the access to cheap, fast operating memory.

Re: How long before PT9 goes fully X64 Native and builds in VST support ?
Thats true. But at that point Leopard And Windows are both going to only be available in 64bit flavers. And at that point it makes sense to begin coding for a 64bit crossplatform application. Remember that DTS has stated that as they have been working on PT they have been updating bits and pieces as they go. So hopefully by the time Win8 drops they will be in much better shape to make the 64bit transition. Or lets put it another way-by the time Win8 is mature they are not going to have much of an excuse to NOT be working on it.
