Default Unable to update USD Firmware via DigiSerial Port

Hello,

We've been unable to update the USD firmware when the unit is connected to the DigiSerial Port. We're doing the update from within the ProTools 5.1.3 software itself. It comes up with an error message stating that the USD is not connected.

It only updates if the USD is connected to the Modem or Printer port. To do that, we then use the USD Software instead.

Other than that, all the USD features work fine when connected to the DigiSerial port.

Any ideas? Faulty USD? Faulty USD Cable? Faulty MIX Core Card DigiSerial Port?

I've done the usual trashing of preferences, and doing a factory reset of the USD.

No, funnily enough that is how Digi have designed it. Pretty stupid, eh?

Actually, it works fine on our other computer setup. Just this station is behaving this way.

-Did you use the same Serial cable when you connected the USD to the other system (that worked)? If so, then that rules out the idea of a faulty cable. If not, use the cable from the good system and see if things work.

-If problems persist, perhaps reseating the Mix Core will correct this issue.

Same cable used.
Did the reseating thing as well.

This system has been this way ever since it was purchased. It was used on a PowerMac 9500.

Then the computer got upgraded to a PowerMac G4/867 now. And the problem has been carried over. But now, the only port available is the DigiSerial Port.

If we need to update the USD firmware, than we need to re-connect it back to the old PowerMac 9500.

What could be happening here? Faulty Mix Core Digiserial port? Or faulty USD?

Brent,

But does a faulty DigiSerial still allow for all other communications via ProTools to the USD to work? For example, we can set clock references, etc. to the USD via the Digi Serial Port. Everthing else, except a firmware update.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">-Although I don't know how the DigiSerial Port is engineered, it is very possible that the firmware information comes across on a certain Pin of the port and that particular Pin is faulty...one of our repair techs also agreed that a faulty card/port could be the problem here.
