Default G5 and PT 24 workaround?

First sorry my english, I am not a native...

Now do you think, there might be eventually a workaround with the voltage incompatibility of G5 and old D24 ( DSP farm ) cards utilizing some future expansion chassis or DIGI will kill it also softwarewise??

I´ve got D24 and 3 DSP farms, SCII running on good old 9600/Newertech G3-400.
Have no way to upgrade to HD thinking of buying new dual G4 1,25.
Anyway coming G5/OS10.2 is very tempting...

Just thought

I think you're out of luck on that one. Maybe best idea is to get fastest G4 you can afford for now or consider moving to a used Mix system.

Don't panic just yet...
I'm sure a solution can be reached.
Maybe a PCI expansion can do the trick, with the old voltage in the expansion and the new voltage on the host card.
Just a wild, but hopeful guess.
Good Luck

Magma and newer Bit 3 Chassis will work with the new G5's and that will solve the D24/DSP farm issues with the G5. Samplecell users are SOL as the G5 is OS X only.

Don't rush out and buy an expansion chassis, though, unless you feel like gambling. Digidesign has not stated that it would support such a configuration.

If you are using a TDM system, why is it necessary to get even the fastest G4, much less a G5? All of the processing is happening on the cards anyway so why spend the money? I can see wanting to get a G5 with an LE system....

Can somebody clue me in?

Thanx for your response.

Looks like all of you have a piece of the truth.

I also kind of believe that some expansion chassis might do the trick and could prolongue life of a good old working stuff, that after all was not cheap at all.

On the other hand moving to the fastest dual G4 dual boot may be more easy, cheaper and final stage where one can still use some nice music experimental staff that may not show up on OS X. In the meantime the G5 bomb may settle down..

As far as PT Mix - this is what I was about to do as an upgrade via our Digi dealer. But Digi doe not provide it anymore, what I think may some people move to G5 native instead of upgrading to HD.
To buy used MIX via mail is a bit monkey bussiness...

As far as the need for faster computer - there is always some...
TDM has its limit and with the power of new computers you can run quite alot of RTAS in tandem with TDM and it looks like 64 bit G5 can be a big step ahead without a need for more hardware cards..

I might be wrong, but it was my understanding that the new model G5 Macs come in three varieties, and you have an option (at least in the applestore) to replace the new PCIx slots with PCI slots which run at the standard 33Mhz.

now ya don't get the super fast bus, but you get a new G5 with a 64 bit processor, and you get to keep your old system.

But if i were making a move like that (and i am not, at least not yet) i would upgrade my system (if possible) and go for the gold!

fast!

dss,

Like the PCI-X slots in the high-end PowerMac G5s, the PCI slots in the 1.6GHz G5 only support 3.3V cards:
