Can You Transfer 001 Sessions To An 002?
I've got a G4 running 0S 9.2.2, PT 5.2.1 and a Digi 001. I'm thinking of getting a G5 running OS 10.3.x, PT 6.x and a Digi 002. Can I transfer sessions on my current system to the new system? I've checked the Answerbase and searched the DUC unsuccessfully trying to find the answer so any help will be much appreciated.

Re: Can You Transfer 001 Sessions To An 002?
I just did what you're planning. The only difference is I was running 5.3.1 on OS 9.2.1.
It's VERY easy. You just hook a standard ethernet cable between the two macs, turn on sharing for the G4 hard drive, enable Appletalk on both, and mount the G4's disk on the G5. Then copy whatever you need to the new G5. I then opened my most recent session in PTLE 6.4. The only messages that come up are asking you if you want the old +6 faders or the newer +12 faders AND it tells you that the old locations for the audio files are no longer valid and to update the location. I was surprised it was so painless. I just finished mixing that song on the G5. I believe you can also do a similar transfer using Firewire between the two macs, but I didn't try that. The mix on that last song was nearly maxing out my G4/400 (I had to "convert after bounce" or it would bomb out on the bounce). I added some more automation, an Altiverb, swapped in the Waves L2 for the L1, added a Waves C4 and a BF compressor or two, and did a "convert while bouncing" with the CPU hovering around 35-40%. It worked just fine. Installing and authorizing all the plugins and VI's to OS X versions was the real PITA! Do plan for a week or two of downtime in that area unless you just want to use what comes with the 002R package. To make that process easier, make sure your G5 can access the Internet for all those authorizations. I got an Airport Extreme card with my G5. It worked instantly with my Linksys 802.11b wireless hub even though it's an 802.11g card.

Re: Can You Transfer 001 Sessions To An 002?
Thanks Iwilliam! It sounds like you're happy with the switch from 001 to 002 and from G4 OS9 to G5 OSX. I've been debating getting a used G4 w/dual 1.25's or 1.5's and/or possibly keeping my 001 instead of getting an 002 based on several comments I've read in the DUC. Price aside, do you think it's a good move to go for the G5 and 002? My dual 500's can barely keep up and I've got to do something.
Thanks again! |
