Instruments midi reverting to none

This happens for at least one instrument channel per project upon opening, and is really annoying as it can take a while to realize an instrument isn't playing.. I can't be the only one buggered by this! Been around for years now, and needs to be fixed.

Closest thing I was able to find on the ideascale was this:

Which was added by jeffro, which gives hope! Perhaps it's related.
