Default Plug ins not seen on instrument drop down

Hi.

I'm new here, so first "hello" and second, sorry if this is a thick question / post.

I've recently bought ProTools and am running it on a Mac Pro.

I have bought NI Scarbass Pre Bass and have downloaded in (3.1GB) it is sitting in the downloads on my Mac.

Problem....I can't see it on my instruments dropdown when I set up an instruments track. ≈ All the ProTools package instruments are visible.

This is my first plug in purchase.

Any thoughts please?

Peter

Hi Peter. Do you have NI Kontakt installed. You will need this to use it. I think you'll find that the pre bass is an instrument library (samples) which you need to load into Kontakt.

And if you don't have Kontakt 5 this library will run inside the free Kontakt 5 Player.

Being you are new to all this I'd like to pass along a few things you may or may not know:
PT wants to have a separate hard drive from your system drive to record to and not a partition on an that drive. Also if you are going to be using a lot of sample-based vi's you might want to think about a separate drive for them as well. No green drives and a minimum speed for a spinner of 7200 rpm. And have all energy saving features inside OSX disabled.

You talking about third drive for samples? If so things tend to load a lot faster especially if you don't have PTHD that has cache. Also smoother sessions with a separate drive for samples; I've had sessions slow to a halt and sometimes crash because the drive would try and keep up with the session demands AND sample loading demands. Another good thing is backups - if you have separate drives for samples and another for session it makes it a breeze to backup your sessions.

Remember with everything on one drive, especially if you're running a spinner, is everything is coming off one read/write head assembly, not to mention one data pipe. The read write assembly can only move so fast.

Hi People.

Thanks so much for the help.

No I had not downloaded the driver for Kontack. That fixed it. When I used CuBase, I'm sure all of the instruments loaded directly.

You have been so helpful. I'll also look at the second / third drives.

Cheers.

It's not a driver for Kontakt but the actual program itself. If a sample based instrument loaded directly in Cubase that's probably because Cubase had a sampler of it's own that loaded the specific library format. Unfortunately not all sample players can load the same formats. Good you got it sorted.
