It depends on your DI. Most DI's still need to go through a preamp, as they do not have them built in.

So typically: Guitar cord into DI, then XLR from DI into preamp, whether it's the built in preamp in an interface, or a separate one.

On your M-Audio preamp, you have DI's on the back of the unit. You might try going into them, since those are doing the job that the Whirlwind would do. I'm not sure if you'd gain anything by using the Whirlwind.

On the DMP, when using the DI's on the back, I think you have to press the switch on the front that says "gain" to Low, or maybe it's High, I'm not sure. Check your manual for how to do this.

As for the stompbox question, you would go into them, then the DI, etc. Treat the DI like an amp input, and do the same order of pedals like you would if you were going into an amp.

Yes, you would want balanced TRS to TRS cables to go from the DMP to the line ins on the 003.

Here would be an example of one:

Note the extra dark ring on the silver shaft. That addition is what makes it different from a normal 1/4" instrument cable, which does not have that. That is what makes it balanced, and makes it function just like an XLR cable.
