Win 7, OWC external HDD, not a valid audio volume...
Hey guys, so I received my OWC Muercury Elite-AL Pro external HDD 750GB 32 cache yesterday so I can properly record with Pro Tools LE. I had a difficult time setting it up since Im not too computer savvy but have finally got the correct GB amount and the HDD showing on my computer.
When I went to record a session in PT I got the message that said not a valid audio volume, if i could to change it to "R" for record. So I followed what was told on this site went to the workspace and under A was a T and under V was an R. I went to change the T to an R under A and it says that it "cannot be designated as an Audio Record volume because it is not a valid audio volume." My drive shows up as BASIC with NTFS. I know alot of you dont use win 7 with PT yet but it is all i have wondering if anyone has any info to fix this problem. any help is appreciated guys thank you here is my sandra report: Processor Model : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6600 @ 2.20GHz Speed : 2.2GHz Cores per Processor : 2 Unit(s) Threads per Core : 1 Unit(s) Type : Mobile, Dual-Core Integrated Data Cache : 2x 32kB, Synchronous, Write-Thru, 8-way, 64 byte line size L2 On-board Cache : 2MB, ECC, Synchronous, ATC, 8-way, 64 byte line size, 2 threads sharing Computer Platform Compliance : Intel Centrino Mobile Technology Mainboard : Sony VAIO BIOS : AMI R2010Y4 11/13/2009 Bus(es) : PCI PCIe IMB USB FireWire/1394 i2c/SMBus Multi-Processor (MP) Support : No Multi-Processor Advanced PIC (APIC) : Yes Total Memory : 3.84GB DDR3 SO-DIMM Chipset Model : Sony GM45 Mobile Controller Hub Front Side Bus Speed : 4x 199MHz (796MHz) Total Memory : 4GB DDR3 SO-DIMM Shared Memory : 128MB Memory Bus Speed : 2x 398MHz (796MHz) Memory Module(s) Memory Module : PQI MECEG523PA0102 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM PC2-6400U DDR2-800 (5-6-6-18 3-24-6-3) Memory Module : PQI MECEG523PA0102 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM PC2-6400U DDR2-800 (5-6-6-18 3-24-6-3) Video System Video Adapter : Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (10 SM4.0, 128MB DDR3, Integrated Graphics) Graphics Processor Storage Devices TOSHIBA MK3263GSX (320GB, SATA150, 2.5", 5400rpm, NCQ, 8MB Cache) : 298GB (C:) RICOH R5C822 : N/A (E:) RICOH R5C592 : N/A (F:) HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT20N (SATA150, DVD+-RW, CD-RW, 1MB Cache) : 3GB (G:) Logical Storage Devices System Reserved : 100MB (NTFS) Hard Disk (C:) : 287GB (NTFS) @ TOSHIBA MK3263GSX (320GB, SATA150, 2.5", 5400rpm, NCQ, 8MB Cache) Recovery : 11GB (NTFS) Removable Drive (E:) : N/A @ RICOH R5C822 Removable Drive (F:) : N/A @ RICOH R5C592 BUILD (G:) : 3GB (UDF) @ HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT20N (SATA150, DVD+-RW, CD-RW, 1MB Cache) Peripherals LPC Hub Controller 1 : Sony (ICH9M) LPC Interface Controller Audio Device : Sony (ICH9) HD Audio Controller Audio Codec : Realtek Semiconductor 262 High Definition Audio Disk Controller : Sony (ICH9) Mobile SATA AHCI Controller USB Controller 1 : Sony (ICH9) USB Universal Host Controller USB Controller 2 : Sony (ICH9) USB Universal Host Controller USB Controller 3 : Sony (ICH9) USB Universal Host Controller USB Controller 4 : Sony (ICH9) USB2 Enhanced Host Controller USB Controller 5 : Sony (ICH9) USB Universal Host Controller USB Controller 6 : Sony (ICH9) USB Universal Host Controller USB Controller 7 : Sony (ICH9) USB Universal Host Controller USB Controller 8 : Sony (ICH9) USB2 Enhanced Host Controller FireWire/1394 Controller 1 : Sony R5C832 IEEE-1394 Controller SMBus/i2c Controller 1 : Intel 801xx/63xx SMBus Printers and Faxes Printer : Microsoft XPS Document Writer (600x600, Colour) Fax : Microsoft Shared Fax Driver (200x200) Peripherals Media Player : () Media Player : () Network Services Network Adapter : Marvell Yukon 88E8057 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller Wireless Adapter 1 : Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (802.11g (ERP), WEP n-bit, 54Mbps) Power Management Mains (AC) Line Status : On-Line Battery No 1 : 95% Operating System Windows System : Microsoft Windows 7 Home 6.01.7600 Platform Compliance : x64 Windows Experience Index Current System : 3.4 Last edited by MCallan713; 05-25-2010 at 07:25 AM. Re: Win 7, OWC external HDD, not a valid audio volume...
Your external drive is not listed in your sandra report.
It is very important to run your sandra report on your computer exactly as it is when running Pro Tools. You are running windows 7 64bit; are you using the beta drivers? (you should be). Reports in another Windows 7 thread state that uninstalling, rebooting and re-installing the driver solved a similar problem.

Re: Win 7, OWC external HDD, not a valid audio volume...
You should also format any new drive before using it.
Here's a link to a quick video on how to do that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hbeUwk3s6c&feature=player_embedded#! |

Re: Win 7, OWC external HDD, not a valid audio volume...
Thanks, Im at work on break now so cant watch the video, but I will check it out even though Im fairly sure that I already formatted it. Over the phone with OWC this morning they helped me out, it matches exactly what my C: drive says basic, ntfs, so Idk, I will do some more searching later, if anyone else has any info its appreciated, thanks again you guys!

Re: Win 7, OWC external HDD, not a valid audio volume...
I went through this same frustrating process.
Make sure you remove the GUID Partitioning Scheme. The instructions on how to do so are included with the drive. It says you shouldn't have to for Win 7, but I definitely had to before the drive was recognized as anything other than transfer only. Good luck! |

Re: Win 7, OWC external HDD, not a valid audio volume...
Your new Sandra report shows Vista Media Center 64 bit. I doubt this will ever fly.

Re: Win 7, OWC external HDD, not a valid audio volume...
Im having a hard time finding anything on removing the GUID partition scheme. Do you remember at all on how to do that?
Whats wrong with the Vista Media Center 64 bit? I have recorded with this laptop on its internal hard drive fine before I bought this external drive, but everyone on this board kept saying I need one, and that it may help stop the HW Buffer Size error I was getting sometimes. The exact message I get when I try to change Audio (T)ransfer to (R)ecord is: "cannot be designated as an Audio Record volume because it is not a valid volume." Re: Win 7, OWC external HDD, not a valid audio volume...
go to windows "computer management/disk management" and search for "convert GDI"
You need to move everything off the disk first. |
