Before going to a professional recovery service you could try DiskWarrior (common Mac disk app)
Saved me a couple of times.

I would also strongly recommend trying DiskWarrior. Its been a lifesaver for us. We use it regularly for HD maintenance. It's been able to restore our video editing arrays so many times we've lost count and its even been able to get access to HDs that had a corrupt sector 0 and were otherwise completely unaccessable.

It'll be the best $80 you've ever spent.

Another possibility is TechTool Pro. A buddy of mine has it and says it's great for drive maintenance, although not as good for resurrecting a dead drive as Disk Warrior. So, if Disk Warrior doesn't work for you it's another option to consider.

I had a similar scenario happen to me a few weeks ago. I now use Disk Warrior/ Onyx, it's FREE and man it is great. And Tooltech Pro 4.0! My Mac couldn't be more happier!!!! Using Panther 10.3.5///P.T.L.E. 6.4.xxx

This is the software Glyph uses to repair your drive if you have a problem and have to send it back to them.
I was once in the middle of a drive-nightmare-from-the-edge-of-hell and the tech support guy at Glyph said that if I ultimately had to send the drive back to them for data recovery, this is what they would use and if it didn't do the trick I was SOL. Fortunately, it didn't come to that. WHEW!

However you choose to do it (and there are a lot of great ideas on this subject in the DUC), BACK UP YOUR DATA! There are two types of computer users: Those who have had catastrophic data losses, and those who are about to!

Peace or else,
Jerry

Disk Warrior first, for sure, and it may take hours to rebuild the directory.

If DW can't fix it, I've heard good things about Data Rescue X, $89 at VersionTracker.
