Default Driver for scarlett 18i8 1st generation

WHen I go to import on my pro tools 2018.12 the import is shaded grey.
From what I have read it is my output device. I am running windows 10
is there a way to get a better driver or is this just too old of a device. I can do most other recording.

Hi Welcome to DUC.

Scarlett device drivers are all handled by Focusrite you should be looking there. And the first result from Google is ... https://downloads.focusrite.com/focu...-18i20-1st-gen.

One challenge with Pro Tools is it uses high-performance ASIO audio devices/drivers on Windows, it does not matter what WASAPI or other drivers might be working with some other DAW or audio app you need to know that ASIO is working OK with the interface. And no, don't ever use ASIO4ALL with this interface. (But you just run the Focusrite driver installer package it should properly install all the types of drivers... if the ASIO device is not working you can uninstall the driver package and try installing again, but especially make sure only Pro Tools is using that interface).

And on Windows you should at least start with your ASIO interface dedicated to Pro Tools and Windows sound and other audio apps using the default systems sound or some other interface.

---

But I am not sure a driver per-se has anything to do with your problem. The problem may just be you don't have a valid output path. Why not start by describing exactly what you are doing. The exact version of Pro Tools. What exactly the playback engine is set to in Pro Tools (do not assume, actually check, Pro Tools will change this on you just to mess with you). Does Setup>IO>{input, output, bus} pages show what you expect. If not does deleting all the paths there and Defaulting the I/O fix that? Does Pro Tools do other things OK? Can you create an empty session? Can you add audio to that session and play that back? Can you open an existing session? Start by reading "help us help you" up the top of each DUC web page, including the type of info that is expected.

I am trying to input a AIFF file but the import is greyed out.

Using pro tools 2018 on an older windows 10 computer.

Yes I can open older projects and can do new recordings.

Try Shutter Encoder to convert to wav. Does the wav import?

Then it has absolutely nothing to do with drivers.

What *exactly* is greyed out?

AIFF is a container. Where did it come from? is it AIFC or AIFF? What exact format is the audio in the container? Pro Tools does not support all audio formats within an AIFF (or WAV) file. Trying to convert the file with stutter decoder or similar is a great idea. Can you play either file in another media player?

And just in case you are new to aiff on Windows:

Recent Windows Media Player support aiff, older versions did not. That does not mean it will support all formats of audio within an AIFF/AIFC container. The more exotic formats are rare, if exchanging between DAWs they should be mono or stereo PCM within the AIFF/AIFC container.

A nice utility for inspecting what is in AIFF and other files is MediaInfo https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo.

And files may have simple PCM content but be corrupted, or maybe its simple issues like file permissions.
