PT Backward Compatibility??
Hi folks...
Thanks in advance for your usual great help! I'm taking my current session into a "studio" to continue work. I'm way back on PT 6.4, and I believe that the studio is on PT 8. What should I expect for compatibility? I'm suspecting that my 6.4 will open with no problems with 8, but if I bring the session home from the studio, will I be able to reopen the "8" files on my dinosaur 6.4??? Whaddaya think? Anything to consider? |

Re: PT Backward Compatibility??
You will have to save the session in the same file type it started in and some plugins, effects which are compatible only with higher releases may not show up when you open the session at home.
I may be wrong but this is what I have seen when I have run into this. Others here may verify me on this or they may say I am wrong however, I am 98% sure of this. |

Re: PT Backward Compatibility??
The older session SHOULD open on the newer rig. As said, some plugins may not work(they will be disabled) so you can choose to leave them in place(inactive) or remove them when you open it on the newer rig. To cover all your bases, I would also consolidate each track back to time 00:00:000 and name them, or export (Export Regions as Files) to a separate folder. That way, no matter what else happens, you can still import the audio into new sessions(some of this depends on whether you are going to finish your work on the newer system, or if you plan on bringing it back to your 6.4 rig). If the session is coming back to you, then make sure they save it as 6.x compatible. Of course, this might also be a good reason to upgrade your self

Re: PT Backward Compatibility??
There is an option to save a session as PT5 . I'd do that as a backup strategy but the PT8 session should open just fine minus the new features such as the extra sends and inserts.

Re: PT Backward Compatibility??
A PT8 or PT7 session will likely not open in a previous version as the file extension is different(starting in ver. 7).
