Default MIDI data on track instead of inside a clip

When I click a pencil tool on a MIDI track, it removes the clips and changes the MIDI to inline (MIDI on the track lane without the clips, whatever the term is - a mini piano roll). Is there are way to revert it and get the clips back? And is it only the pencil tool that does this? Thanks.

Hit - on your keyboard when you have your midi track / instrument track selected to toggle between clip view and notes view in the edit window.

Also, tho change the view and others views (block view, velocity etc) you can click on the dropdown menu below the track name and record/solo/mute knobs, to select the view you want.

Aaahh, so simple. Thank you! There are still some things not used to yet in PT. Was thinking in terms of other DAWs and totally forgot about the drop-downs on the track. What is the key command for this, I looked but didn't recognize what would likely be that.

The minus symbol on your keyboard :) >>> - <<< if you press - when you have your midi/virtual instrument track selected it toggles between notes view and clips view
