MIDI receiving all channels...even when single channel selected?!
Hi all,
Has anyone noticed this? I've got a Fatar controller, which whilst having a nice feel, constantly outputs on 3 channels at once. You can program the splits to only play over certain ranges, but the wrong button press can destroy these! in short, it's fiddly, and I've already wasted enough time with it! Now, I thought I'd just set each pro tools instrument to follow a single midi channel - so it ignores the other 2. Simple right? Nope...although PT does indeed only record the selected channel, whilst actually playing, it triggers on any midi channel, the result being phasey sounds as three of the same note are triggered at once. Just about workable, but not much fun to play. Has anyone come across this? Any workarounds? I've tried to set things up at Midi studio level, but I can't seem to filter specific channels. Plus it can't be anything but a PT bug - or "feature", designed so that anytime you select a track it plays, regardless of if it's in record or not. Any advice gratefully received - it's a pretty daft thing to get stuck on! |

Re: MIDI receiving all channels...even when single channel selected?!
There's got to be a way to get the Fatar to send on only one channel. If not, my solution would be to replace it with one that does. I would consider that to be a much greater flaw than PT's inability to filter MIDI input by channel per track. Imagine what you'd have to do to work around that problem with any hardware multichannel MIDI synth. Ack. I just can't believe the Fatar must always send key data on multiple channels at once.

Re: MIDI receiving all channels...even when single channel selected?!
Thanks for replying. Replacing the fatar is not an option. I like the action, it behaves as the manual said it should, and it's fine with applications that behave as they should.
As I said, there is a workaround, I can set the splits at the far ends of the keyboard so they don't interfere - but if you accidentally hit the wrong button it's really easy to load a different program. Fwiw any multi-timbral synth I've ever used has been able to choose what channel it receives on. I agree it's not ideal, but I'm really not interested in it's live usage - I just want to use it as a controller. It's not a massive issue - but if it's not a bug, it's a pretty strange feature. I was just wondering if there was something obvious I was missing. If not, I'll just have to make sure I only hit the right buttons from now on! |
