I finally gave up on this as nothing I did would prevent updates(running Win10 Pro). Having said that, no update has caused any issue other than 2 tweaks getting reset(but only once or twice). Those were:
1-Sound Properties reset to my interface as the default playback device
2-USB Power Management on some(but not all) USB ports

I keep a recent boot drive image nearby. Having said that, I take all Windows updates. I don't recall any issues caused by a Windows update.

Hi all, thanks for the very helpful information. In the end, I was able to pin this down iLok/PACE updates - as soon as I updated this I was back to full speed! I also got the Trasher utility in case something happens in the future. Thanks all!
