Default On HDX rig, Dyn3 Expander/Gate timing is different (DSP vs. Native)

Here's something that's been bugging me for a while when using keyed gates.
  • I've got an HDX rig. Running PT10.3.5
  • It's on a Westmere hex-core Mac Pro running 10.7.5
  • Delay compensation is on, set to long.
Scenario: Mixing some drums.
  • The Dyn3 Expander/Gate is used to gate the outside kick mic. A pre-fader aux-send is set to deliver the signal from the more-isolated beater track to key this gate on the outside kick. (key bus selected, key button on)
  • Attack on the Dyn3 Expander/Gate is set all the way fast.
If the plugin is in "Native" mode, the transient of the kick is chopped off.
If the plugin is in "DSP" mode, it's great.

You can toggle from Native to DSP while playing, and hear the transient appear.

This is not isolated. I've tried it on multiple HDX rigs.

Native instantiation of the Dyn3 Expander-Gate plugin seems to work fine in this same routing/keying IF it's happening on a non-HDX system (e.g.: on an HD Native or MBox/native rig)

Obviously, I can use DSP versions on this rig, but it makes for something I need to watch out for, and make sure PT doesn't change back to native to 'optimize voice usage' on insert chains with mixed native and DSP instantiations.

Note that this happens consistently even with only the Dyn3 Expander/Gate on the outside kick and nothing at all on the beater track being sourced for the key send.

I suspect this is something in the engine itself, not just this plugin.

Avid?

Probably has to do with Sends and Delay Comp.

I remember reading about there being issues with Sends being comp'ed properly?

Maybe someone that remembers will chime in.

Well, I can just verify that on pt 10 hd on an hdx system, even with "compensate side chain inputs" checked in preferences, and even with plenty of delay compensation to spare, the timing of a send to a side chain input on a gate or compressor is still way off. I mean WAY off.

I do wonder why that nearly-hidden preference is left as an option at all ... and if it needs to be one, why isn't it in the Playback Engine > Delay Compensation area (there's room) rather than under clip autofade settings and cal-reference levels in the misc preferences?

... But I digress.

Interestingly, it seems that it helps, but sometimes a toggle between DSP/Native or Native/DSP (and back) is still needed to reset a misbehaving keyed plugin.

*shrugs*

And yet other times, like WildHoney said, it's unfixably way-off.
