Default How do I assign drum samples to midi

Hi there. I just bought Massey's DTM plug-in. Got it working & seems to be pretty accurate synching midi with the original drum transients. So far so good...

This is where I get stumped... how do I then get those midi notes to trigger a specific samples? (e.g. I want the midi to randomly fire say 2 or 3 slightly different kick samples).

I’m basically looking to find a way of augmenting (not fully replacing) acoustic drums with samples & was advised Massey was ideal. I’m just not sure where I go next.

Any help appreciated… thanks

I just upgraded to PT LE 8 (loving it too!)

You just use the MIDI to trigger a sampler plugin (if you have your own drum samples you want to use) or a Drum VI, like BFD

Yeah, I understand the principle, but I'm not sure how to actually assign the sample(s)... I'm really not very good with midi.

I'm a home user who plays drums, guitar, keyboard & vox. I'm not happy with my drums sound, so now looking to see how I can use drum replacement to augment my sound.

I'd like to use my own samples to augment the existing drums. So I'd track some good solid kick & snare hits. Then I'd cut them into individual samples (e.g. snare hit 1, snare hit 2,, snare hit 3, rim shot 1, rim shot 2....etc..). I'd then like to be able to trigger those samples, but to randomize between 1, 2 & 3 so I retain some natural feel.

So, to be more specific, my questions are as follows:
1. How do I create my own samples (i.e. individual snare hits) that can be used for augmentation
2. When I have those samples, how do I use my DTM midi track to trigger the samples randomly (say 3-5 different samples)
3. If my own samples don't work out, what would you recommend... I have the usual Digi Pro Tools stuff (Structure, Xpand2!, Boom, BFD Lite, Miroslav Philharmonic & Sample Tank 2.5)

Like I say, I'm really new to this stuff, so any guidance is appreciated.

Thanks

There's a couple of videos on the blog showing how to assign them, one by Brian from Digi and one from me.

Cheers Russ - those vids were great. I really like the simplicity of the Boom option. Will have to try that one out.

One thing that still confuses me though (if I wanted to use my own samples). Massey's plug-in assigns a constant midi note (i.e. it doesn't change from A to A#, B etc... so how can I use that to trigger from 1 of 3 or 4 different samples... e.g. if I wanted to use the midi note to trigger a random sample of say 3 different kicks?

Also, (& this may really show my ignorance) but I assume the Massey plug-in midi data retains the the velocity data of the original audio... so does this means the sample velocity will change relative to the original audio? I'm hoping it does.

Thumbs up Re: How do I assign drum samples to midi

Brian C has played with it more than me. I'm not sure how often he is in the DUC, so of any DTS guys can get a message to Brian for clarification on this that would be great.

Not sure how much this will help but figured id try and throw my input in...im sure theres a million different ways of doing it but the way i do it is actually adjust the sample itself its a bit of a pain but it works for now being im still new to the pro tools end of this stuff myself...anyways say you want to randomly fire the kick drum like u said...if u google the percussion midi map it will give u all the midi key numbers...the kick drums are 35 & 36...now with that said...in ur drum track look at the piano roll...each key in it corresponds to the midi numbers...basically just count the keys from the ground up..once u reach 35 & 36 there u go...go into the track and pick a few triggers out and switch them from 35-36 or vice versa...im sure theres easier ways but as i said im new to this to and thats how im getting by at the moment...another idea which idk if its possible but possibly just create a new track with solely the kick drum...go into bfd or ur other midi programs and adjust the kick there ie...a pearl kick and a cb kick...just an idea dont know if it actually works but hey....if this was no help at all then sorry lol

Thanks for that, but I'm still confused

I have been able to create a midi track that mirrors my own kick drum (using Massey's DTM drum to midi software).

How do I assign a sample to those midi notes?... I think I need an idiot’s step by step guide on how to get a sample/samples assigned to the midi notes. How would I do this using:

1. Xpand!2 (or similar application) sample(s)
2. Sample(s) I created myself.

Any help greatly appreciated!

So your MIDI is on a MIDI track...?

Make an AUX track. Insert Xpand. Choose a drum patch

on the MIDI track, change the output to Xpand ch-1

Play

Hi folks,

I used Massey's DTM plug-in to create midi data based on the existing kick pattern. I then dragged this midi data across to an instrument track. I selected Xpand2! as the instrument & then choose an acoustic drum patch (don't have the exact details of the patch in front of me as I'm in work at the minute). On this patch, there were 3 different kick samples. I wanted to select one of those patches, but couldn't figure out how to do it.

So, how do I get the midi data on the instrument track to trigger the exact sample I want?... I think I need to transpose the midi note to a note that corresponds with the sample I want. That's where I'm stumped.
