Default Need to buy a incredibly cheap Mac for 001!

I need a bare bones Mac with a PCI slot for using a 001. Performance is not an issue, as I will only be using 1-5 plugins max. Does anyone know what kind of machine I should buy?

Thanks,
Drew.

I know a guy who used an old beige Powermac 233Mhz G3 (maybe it was 266) with an 001 and it worked fine for simple sessions. I have a nicely outfitted BW G3/350 that is a great 001 machine (that's what I used it for from 1999 to just a few months ago) gathering dust in my basement. It has lots of RAM, SCSI card and lots of storage. I'd sell it if your interested. Let me know. But to answer your question, the beige G3 will work, although Digi claims that there is a "performance issue" where it will sometimes pop out of recording with an error message. You can see that warning by clicking here.

I think I've decided on a 350mhz G3; they go on ebay for $200 without peripherals.

Take the PCI to AGP performance into consideration if you want to run the newer software.

If you are interested, I'm selling my original 001 machine... an upgraded UMAX S900, with a G3/350 (i think) mach ZIF upgrade. It's got 3 drives- a 4 GB, a 2GB and a 14GB that I used for my sessions.

It has a USB card added, and I even have a second graphics card I might sell too if you want dual monitors. It worked great for me up to PT 5 (when I upgraded), with only the "beige G3 errors" that were a minor annoyance, but never hurt anything. I'll make you a NICE deal!!
email me at joemazza AT bellsouth DOT net if you are interested!

PCI graphics are slower than AGP and if you want to run PT6.1 remember OS X was not supported with the older Blue & White G3s or the PCI Graphics G4s, only the AGP graphics models.
Not to say it won't run but you will be asking a struggling machine to work even harder.
You will probably get your best performance by staying with 5.x, but you lose out on some features.

true, but for 1-5 plugs, the cheapest way would be an older machine running OS 9.x and PT 5.x
