Default Oldest PT version w/Beat Detective

What is the earliest version of Pro Tools that has Beat Detective?

Currently, I'm rock solid (for several years without crashes) using system 8.6 and PT 5.0.1 on a 9600. My video card (DC30+) works great, all my disks and libraries work flawlessly, and I haven't seen a need to upgrade.

I own 5.1 on CD, and a system 9 install disk. I always said I would wait until there was a feature I needed, which would improve the sound of my product before I upgraded. Now I'm thinking that Beat Detective is that feature.

So what is the smallest incremental step I can take and get Beat Detective?

Any thoughts?

Beat Detective is one of the features listed in the "What's New in Pro Tools 5.1" document, on the PT 5.1 CD and in the Technical Document Library.

Thank you Digidesign. I suppose I could have looked that up for myself!

Here's a new question. Which version of 5.1 is the most stable?

PTUser, I _highly_ recommend upgrading to 5.1!! Lightyears ahead of 5.0 in many functional aspects. We're running it on a 933 and a 9600 with Newer G3 card. Very stable.

if you chase/generate code much, 5.1.3cs10 is the only way to go... it's not perfect but it is certainly better than the previous builds

Thanks to all who have written here and those who will soon!

dopamine: which 5.1 do you use? 5.1.1 etc? It seems your setup is the closest to mine.

PT user:

This is Jared from FTM. Dude you're so old school. I feel behind the times and I'm running 5.1.1 Anyway, it's very stable. You need to upgrade to at least OS 9.1 but in my experience 9.2.1 is the most stable OS. The other major feature of 5.1 over 5.0 is stereo tracks. Are you still spending time grouping mono tracks dude?! You need to get out more!!

Yeah, I am/was willing to group mono tracks in order to keep running 8.6. I NEVER crash. Never. Can't say the same for others!

Also, grouped mono tracks don't sound any different from a stereo track, so since everything was rock solid, I was hesitant to change. I think Beat Detective is the thing that has pushed me over the top!

For what its worth, I purchased the upgrade CD over a year ago, so it really was a strategic decision not to upgrade. I like to see a platform running smoothly before I jump in and put my butt on the line. Old school, yes! And ALWAYS on time with my deadlines.

Check this out - I'm so anal about all of this that I've actually simulated a complete reloading of my HD (Monte Method rules!) in under 5 minutes. Should my system ever go down while clients are here, I can honestly tell them "I'll be back up in 5".

For the rest of you folks, wolfhound is a really nice guy, and a good engineer. Props, dude.

9.2.2, 5.1.3, rock-stable. I never, ever experience crashes in PT.
