playback levels - full range
POW-R type 3 - yeah, don't like it
thanks

What does "full range" mean?

I misspoke when I desribed any auditory nerve input as arising from other than inner ear events. What I should have said is that those conductive paths which reach the inner ear, bypassing all outer and middle ear paths, need to be considered as a portion of the "ear's" behavior. Nika appears to not only agree, but he cites that much work has been done to characterize those modes.

Our ability to sense vibration and to incorporate that into our perception of sound, though it may be independent of auditory paths, seems important to me as well. That these other events, which ultimately reach the brain as electrical data, are both low in amplitude and lacking in HF content, wouldn't, it seems to me, negate our need to entertain them in our description of the ear as the filter between the brain and the outside world. Perhaps Nika's point is that they are already being incorporated into what we know about hearing and I just missed it.

Anyway, thanks for entertaining the dialog.

Yes. What's interesting is that for certain types of deafness they can use bone-conduction to get people to hear - essentially providing something like several hundred dB of equivalent SPL at very high frequencies directly to the skull and allowing the resonance carry forth into the inner ear, bypassing the middle ear. Speech intelligibility goes up dramatically from these tests.

I'm just not sure it's pertinent in our map of maximum frequency response? I think it may certainly be relevant when dealing with low frequency issues - especially at very high amplitudes. Fortunately, the limitations of digital audio aren't manifested in that realm, so I haven't spent any energy researching already done research in that field.

Cheers!

mastering engineers stating their opinions about how different dithers sound, and possibly preparing a listening test.
evidence that dither does not perform its function inaudibly.
nobody seems to be saying that they like the way dither changes the sound.

i mean, if dither performed inaudibly and the transition to 16 bits was equivalent to 24 bits, why would all the different "flavors" of dither exist anyway?

if anybody likes the way dither sounds, that's cool. personally i hate it and that's why i want to deliver in 24 bits.

That they don't agree means none of them works?

then i haven't heard any that work
but there are some i haven't heard
do you know of any mastering engineers who find any of them transparent?
if so, which ones? (dithers)
do you consider any of them to be transparent?
